High mileage, but newer - sensible?

I have seen a car on Gumtree that I am very interested in. A 2013 Volvo V60, £4k. It has done 151k though. Cambelt has been done and a full Volvo history... Is this mileage too much for the price? Or could this be a bargain? Looks like a really nice car for the money. It did 120k miles in it's first 3 years. No record of a new clutch though, so that is potentially something that'd need doing reasonably soon.

High mileage has never bothered me, my last winter hack was a 230k VW passat which was still on its original clutch.

mileage is never the concern, its how its been accumulated. a 150k mile car putting it on in the first 3 years of its life will still have plenty of wear in it

I am leaning towards not being too bothered by it. I just can't believe the price, for such a nice car. Some of the options I've been considering (Freelander 2, CRV MK3) are £4k+ for a 2007 with almost that mileage on anyway. Bonkers.

I did think about getting a cheaper Volvo estate, but it'd only be £1000-£2000 cheaper. So it almost seems daft not to get a much newer, nicer one.

I would be fairly happy with that mileage on that type of car - sounds like it has just driven up and down the motorway for a few years.

Yeah, that seems to be the case. There doesn't seem to be any others around for under £5k

Could depend on what kind of mileage you expect to do?

I bought a bargain 3 year old Fiesta with almost 70k motorway miles last year and it’s been absolutely fine. My own mileage is relatively low though so it’ll even out over the next couple of years.

Not mega miles, certainly. DPF isn't an issue as I can take it for good runs, but my overall mileage won't be huge.

Had a good chat to the seller on the phone, really nice chap. It's only ever been to a Volvo garage for servicing/any work done. He had an offer from a buyer in London, but has put the guy off because he would rather sell it to someone local so there is no hassle.
Potentially seeing it asap with a view to buy it if my partner likes it.

Yes. Pretty clean, I've seen much worse! It is pretty much just a couple of tyre advisories and one for brake pads a few years ago.

Lots of recalls, but likely only affecting small batches of production. Sounds like previous owner is the type to have anything affected dealt with by a Volvo dealer

Yeah, it had multiple services at Volvo a year with the first owner (that did 120k miles in 3 years). Then the current owner had it serviced yearly at Volvo and had them do anything it needed by the sounds of it.

As long as there are receipts saying the suspension has been refreshed then yes go for it if not then be a bit more cautious.

He mentioned one of the rear trailing arms was done at a cost of £450ish at Volvo, with a receipt. Not sure if that was actually both or not.

I am not sure about other suspension bits.

Very true. I'm not sure I want to be spending a fortune on it if I'm upping my budget to this already. I'll enquire about other suspension work, if not, then perhaps it wouldn't be the best financial decision!

Nice options. We had originally set out to get an older Volvo as we've always wanted a V70 or similar, but I saw the V60 and couldn't resist enquiring more.
