Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but can someone give me some info regarding yellow flags.
I race go-karts but the pricipal is still the same. I understand that it is a caution flag, usually because there is an incident on the track ahead. My question is at what distance before the flag should you slow down.
Someone already mentioned that if you can see a yellow flag then you should slow down, but if you can see the flag two corners away you would not slow for it until you reach it but what is the official line.
Thanks
Paul
Blue Book says...
Stationary Yellow Flag: Danger Slow down sufficiently to ensure that full control of the vehicle can be retained. No overtaking
Waved Yellow Flag: Great danger. Slow down considerably. Be prepared to suddenly change from the projected racing line, or take other evasive action including stopping if necessary. No overtaking.
It doesn't specify distances, however If there is a marshal post not holding out a flag between you and the flag you can see, then continue racing until you have passed the post without the flag, you are then in the zone controlled by the next marshal post. Bear in mind though, if the next post has a waved yellow, the danger is in the next zone. A waved flag should be preceded by a stationary flag at the previous marshal post, but doesn't always, marshals are only human.
The part of the track controlled by the yellow flag starts at the poost it's displayed from. If the incedent is between that post and the next then there will be a green flag at the second post. Only when your past the green flag does the yellow control finish. If there's a waved yellow three post are invovled, a stationary yellow post, a waved yellow post and a green post. So, you can't race from the first yellow to the green.
It is possible for there to be a yellow post follwed by two waved yellow posts if visability of the incedent is poor to fast approaching cars
