As the title suggests I need a little help from fellow forum members. The choice is between an X5, VW Touareg, Audi Q5 and the MB GLE. The wife does like the look of the new Seat Tarraco and SKODA Kodiaq, but I am just not convinced. Whatever I go for will be diesel and automatic.
The car is going to be the main family car and will be kept for a good few years. Therefore servicing costs, replacement parts etc will factor into my thinking of which car I go for. We would obviously want the newest possible car for the money.
Are there any members here with experience of running any of the cars above and happy to share their experiences?
Have I missed out any other cars which could fit the bill?

I'd add the Rx450h to that list. Apart from the marmite gearbox, superb cars. My OH has one and she loves it. Spacious, airy, and very reliable.

ETA 35MPG petrol. And now a 10 year warranty if you keep it in the dealer network... As you asked about running costs.

Jaguar F-Pace is great. I ran one for a bit and it fulfils the road based SUV job fantastically.

Don't overlook Infiniti and Lexus' offerings if you want something solid and reliable.

I think the Peugeot 5008 is the best looking SUV on the market at the moment. It’s specc’ed well in anything GT trim and over and can be had with a 1.5 EAT8 diesel for cheaper running costs.

Some will argue it’s an MVP with an SUV body, but this is top of my list at this price point. One to consider and look into. It does have a huge boot and 7 seats but looks very SUV to me. Only downside is not available in AWD if that’s important to you.

Have you considered a Porsche Cayenne? I picked one up recently way under your budget. Cracking piece of kit.

The X5 would be my first choice although I do like the XC90's too. Much of a muchness, they are all good at what they do and probably have similar costs so it's what you prefer.

If you're considering the Q5 then you should also consider the Macan.

Not sure I'd fancy running any of these for "a good few years" on a limited maintenance budget. Way too much potential for expensive things to wrong.

The Touareg is a very capable vehicle in 3 litre diesel form. I had one for a year, but it was just too wide for most of the roads where I live.
Older X5s seem to aiming for Land Rover's top spot in the unreliability table. I'd want a proper BMW extended warranty, which isn't cheap.

My money would be going into something up to a couple of years old with a very long manufacturer's warranty - Toyota/Lexus (10 years), or Kia (7 years). Possibly even a brand new electric MG, which I think now comes with a 7 year warranty?

I wonder how long it will be before the "premium" manufacturers have enough faith in their product to offer a 7 or 10 year warranty?

I bought a hammer and a computer yesterday.

The hammer came with a 10 year warranty, the computer only came with a 2 year warranty. I fully expect the hammer won't give me any issues.

Do you really need something X5 sized? Just got rid of a fully loaded 2017 X3 35d with c.21k miles for about your budget. 3.0d's are a little cheaper and nearly as quick. I had mine for just under 4 years, had 1 service and 2 rear tyres. Completely reliable.

Firstly SUV's won't be cheap to maintain but you can buy them with sensible running costs, if you want to keep costs sensible I'd go for a 3.0d as it'll be less stressed pulling the weight about, with that in mind here's where I'd be looking.

QX70 Ultimate when it comes to spec these really can't be beaten, they also have fantastic fit & finish. Along with set price menu servicing from your local Nissan dealership & they're an absolute bargain compared to the opposition.

S Premium

The F Pace is better looking & very nicely spec'd but are they worth the Premium over the Infiniti? That's something for you to decide.

F Pace V6d S

Not quite as nice but still a great family wagon is the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit:

Overland

All the above will be as reliable if not more so than the Germans & be a bit cheaper to run too.

Your budget will get you a nice X3:

Or X5 SE:

My leftfield pick & the car I think will suit you best is the Hyunda Tucson 2.0d MEHV Premium SE with a Manufacturers Warranty until 2024, that's a lot of peace of mind.

Mazda CX-5 should be the proper PH choice, as it actually drives quite well....for an suv.

Thank you all for your suggestions!! You have definitely given me some superb suggestions and some great advice. The wife likes to look of the F-Pace. I am worried though as it is a JLR product after all (not exactly known for their reliability). I quite like the Infiniti but just can't look past that 'busy' interior.

Has anyone run an F-Pace and would be happy to share their thoughts? I'd probably be looking at the 2017/2017 2.0 RWD diesel instead of the V6 lump though.

I appreciate all of your help so far.

Volvo XC60 would be near top of my list

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202104281...

However X3 or X5 are a good shout as dynamically and engine wise they have the Volvo beaten IMO.

The 3.0d is the pick out of the two engines & is the more reliable engine out of the two, the 2.0d seems to be more issue prone, one thing I will say is that all of these premium SUV's aren't the pinnacle of reliability, they seem to all have niggly issues.

I leased a 2017 Touareg for a couple of years... it was a brilliant car.

Big, super comfy, brilliant driving position and seats, loads of kit (R line plus), quick enough and actually drove ok. High 20’s mpg. Did 23k miles in 24 months and no issues at all. Tyres still had loads left.

Summer of 2019 I drove from weybridge to southern Spain in it, loaded to the roof with stuff for our Spanish home. 1463 miles in 22.5 hours, ambient temps as high as 42*c, 100’s of miles cruising at well over 100mph. Never missed a beat.

Would have another one!
