Google maps - route planning
Discussion
Mods - please move if necessary as this may not be specific to bikes
Hi guys,
I recently installed a quadlock on my KTM 1290 SDR (KTM's MyRide app is pants so I wanted to see the screen/directions). Now typically you plot a route from A to B, but on a bike you want to go via some stunning roads to accomplish this you can add stops and Google will join the dots to provide the route you want to take - great!
However GM classes these as stops not waypoints, so when I tested this last weekend at every stop GM would indicate I'd reached my stop and prompted me to click continue, which when riding in gloves isn't an option.... so I'd have to pull over, remove a glove, click continue, glove on and carry on. When I've got 10 "stops" it understandably became annoying.
Is there any way in GM to avoid this? If not what other apps are available (iPhone) that will work in this way... I tried Waze also a few days ago, I've never been a fan and I missed one of the stops and although I could see the map to continue to the next stop it was constantly trying to get me to go back to the missed waypoint.

Calimoto is good and you can program it to find the twisties automatically.
Not sure about the waypoints thing, but will check this weekend.
ALso has a browser planner you can start your planning on the PC the evening before 9 or Friday afternoon if it's quiet at work

I've had that issue with Google maps too. If you miss the stop also, google will try and reroute you back to it.
I tend to not bother with plotting waypoints and just try to remember them and ignore the google directions. However more recently have tried calimoto and really liking it.

Don't know about free options. However as usual, throwing money at the problem will fix it.
MyRouteApp (subscription) to uploads routes to a bike specific GPS (expensive), which you can also use with gloves on.
I had the free MyRouteApp trial and found it really awkward to use (it wasn't intuitive and after 3 attempts I gave up) I'd mention that there are regular 50% discount offers if you registerMyRouteApp (subscription) to uploads routes to a bike specific GPS (expensive), which you can also use with gloves on.

I find iMyRouteApp fine to use. The PITA factor is that the base map (which you only use at the waypoint marking stage, not when you are actually riding) is some open source street map. Therefore I look up a location on Google (Bob’s greasy cafe or a road junction etc) on Google Maps, then have to find that same location on MyRouteApp and mark it there instead of Google. I also have to convert it from a series of waypoints to a route in the GPS. Iminquarantine said:

I also have to convert it from a series of waypoints to a route in the GPS. They've dropped google mapping because of licencing issues, but I tend to use the TomTom or HERE (Garmin) mapping anyway, as that's what I'm outputting the files to on phone or SatNav. I also tend to be outputting tracks rather than routes, because I want to stay on the roads exactly as I've chosen/outlined it in myrouteapp, rather than the individual navigation software choosing the route between waypoints/POIs (which will vary depending on manufacturer which isn't great for groups sharing a route).
Paid versions also give extra features/mapping options.
I use it for planning/sharing tours all over Europe for groups of us.
I also do what you do in searching on Google for specific buildings etc but can view the actual locations (as you can do in google) by dropping onto the route & looking at the actual locations.
The other problem with some long term planning is that some automatically re-route for winter closures (if you are trying to plan some routes for the next summer during winter months), whilst if you use other mapping they don't do that, so if you have the paid versions you can again choose a mapping option that shows winter closures or not to your liking.
I ended up recently having to drive about 100 miles home, initially in unfamiliar territory.
The route on Google Maps was logical and included a section of the M1 with a service station on it. I needed a snack and brew so this was selected and off I go.
After a while something didn’t seem right so I looked again. The cock sucking GM had rerouted me so no petrol/snack/brew. FFS it’s next to useless (ok I know it isn’t) and I’d promised myself never to use it again.
I just won’t learn. It could be so good if only it was controllable by a numpty like me.
