Hello chums.

A bit of background. My daily car is a 21 year old Toyota with 265k on the clock. Also on the driveway: A 1982 Ford Escort estate, a 1983 Ford Sierra and a 1984 Mini. Modern cars and me? Indifferent.

That said, I have been made middle management in the last few days and - sadly - there's no company car scheme available to upgrade me from my existing Cortina L to a Granada GL. I have to do the work myself.

My car allowance, in PH terms, is probably quite laughable. £350pcm. I am quite happy with it though as it was an after thought and the basic pay leapt more than it ought to have.

Nonetheless, if I want to relieve them of their money I need to get a new car.

Here are the rules:
1. Up to 2 years old.
2. Befitting of a modern media organisation in 2021.
3. That's it really. No rules on body styles or doors. Whilst no manufacturers have been stated, I believe that a Dacia would fail rule 2.

I am open to full electric as it is unusual for me to rack up more than 80 miles in a day. I also have a beautiful T4 Caravelle for family duties so trips to the seaside won't give me anxiety range. Charging is a doddle, I have a 50 ft driveway and mains easily available. That said, the good lady and I can't agree on any full electric cars. She thinks the Honda E has scary eyes, I think the Leaf II is a bit disappointing considering they have years more experience under their belt.

I've been leaning towards PHEVs because I can then have a decent sized car. Whilst I like the 208e, I have to say I've always been more comfortable in saloons myself.

I think I'm going to look at PRIUS Plug Ins this weekend. The looks are challenging but, actually, if you look at older ones they no longer look as stark as they once did.

What would you go for? PCP over 3 years. I could stick some money in myself for the right car.

Tia.

Is there a cash alternative and if you take it are you required to buy a car less than 2 years old? If the answers are yes, no then it would be worth doing the sums on the tax etc to just buy something cheaper and older outright rather than leasing using the monthly allowance.

Hyundai Ioniq, PHEV or full BEV. I'd go Full BEV myself. But then I'm a Leaf driver of 4 years and totally used to it.

If you go full electric then should be some amazing tax breaks for the next few years at least.

Sorry, just to clarify - it's cash they're giving me. £350pcm extra into my salary. I appreciate that it's taxed at source, and that it'd be more efficient for the company to get me a Prius et al as a Company Car but - right now - it's not going to happen.

Golf GTE's are on good personal lease deal at the moment.

3 + 36 months, 10K per annum around £350 inc VAT.
We had the last gen on 3 years lease, it was excellent. 20-30 miles on electric. 40mpg+ on motorway as hybrid. However you may now have to start getting your head around touchscreens.

Also, Octavia VRS Hybrid, Lexus ES300h , Cupra formenta hybrid, all around £350 per month personal lease inc VAT

not clear...have they given you a £4200 a year salary increase or are you in receipt of an allowance?

If its a salary increase then you should be free to drive whatever you want.
