So the question is should I spend my 35k+ on a Gr Yaris or am I better with an f80 M3 or an Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio?

(Need four seats and a great drive, used for commuting on fun roads and the odd drive into Wales. Currently I have an Abarth as a run around but recently have had a nice b7 RS4, looking for its replacement.)

If it’s 4 seats and not 5 you need I would go M4.

Great car.

I’d not, much prefer the shape of the M3. Tough call tbh, as much as I like the Yaris for what it is, the M3 has tons more presence and will be built and kitted out better.

I’d potentially go M3.

Alfa or BM for me. Buy wisely and you'll probably see minimal depreciation too.

Would take either over the Yaris.
I'd have to take a close look at the Alfa as it's very tempting but id probably end up.with the M3

What are you looking to spend on an ongoing basis?

I thought my old Cerbera was expensive at £1000 for 4 brake discs and Carbon Lorraine CL5 pads around, but my jaw hit the floor on Friday when my friend told just the pair of front discs on his M2 cost £900 in parts alone. That's firmly in "f### that" territory for me... The discs look pretty for sure but they're consumables and really heavy cars like BMW M-cars consume them very quickly.

The M3 and QF will be subject of countless group tests (I would have thought) in the motoring media. Pretty sure the consensus is both are wonderful cars but maybe the QF edged it (though it could be those were the ones I read).

Add to that the looks and image, I'd take the Alfa.

Yeah I am mindful of the cost to run difference but my rs4 had carbon ceramics and did 22mpg when careful so it’s more about what’s going to be fun.

Alfa for me too, much more rare, M3s are everywhere.

Yeah I’m less concerned about the choice between those two, more whether I should go for the new Yaris or a second hand high performance saloon!?

I'd go for the M3(or M4) or the Quad over the Yaris for sure. Ideally though it would be very nice to have the M3(or M4/Quad) and the Yaris together. biggrin

Which will be more fun is more difficult to answer I reckon. The Yaris will be fun because it is relatively small and light, whereas the M3 etc will be fun trying to exploit all of the performance, but they are obviously bigger and heavier though.

A big consideration is how your paying if it’s finance the Yaris makes a lot of sense. The Yaris is 0% APR where a PCP on an M3 will be 7.9% of your lucky which makes a difference in circa 35k

The QF is just that bit more of a driver car than the M3 & edges it just about everywhere, both are great steers & once you test drive them you'll know which one is the pick for you.

Saloons:
- space for adults in the back more comfortably, not just kids, bigger boot
- better on long journeys (more comfortable)
- AT so less effort in town
- more power so probably better on big fast A-roads

Yaris:
- smaller and lighter so probably more fun outright
- better on smaller roads, handy in narrow villages/car parks
- paying for depreciation on a PCP is more of a known cost than irregular maintenance items on high performance saloons
- 4WD so will be able to get the power down when it's wet, as it normally is in Wales, and better in winter

I don't think it's clear which will work out better financially, between Covid and the impending phase-out of combustion engined cars it's hard to make predictions.

Also note, I understand the GR Yaris is fully ordered through til sometime next year, whereas you could presumably find a secondhand Beemer fairly quickly.

Personally I'd only buy a saloon if I needed the space. So if I needed to carry adults in the back I'd get the Alfa.

If not, I'd probably end up choosing between the Yaris or a more traditional sports car like a 911 with similar accommodation.

Got a Yaris order, just always like to challenge a purchase before full commitment to see if I could be doing something better.

I used to have an FK2 Civic type R, sold it for a b7 RS4, the RS4 was more enjoyable for cruising around but the civic was more fun and felt just as fast for a blast (despite my RS4 having 440bhp).

Will the Yaris and your Abarth be a bit too similar to each other though?
