Moving from a M235i to F82 M4?
Discussion
Hi all. I've had my M235i auto for 3 and a bit years now and am getting to the point that I'd like a change. I've considered a few different options such as a merc C43 (felt too refined to me, not exciting to drive), A45 (don't think it's worth the extra I'd have to pay over what I can get for the M235i), and am leaning towards an F82 M4 at the moment. I've been a huge fan of the way they look for a long time and I think I could now pick up a decent example within my budget of £30k?
Obviously aware that servicing and running costs will be significantly higher than what I have now which is why I don't want to overspend on the initial purchase, I'd probably want to take out a BMW extended warranty on it as well which I'm sure will be much more expensive than what I have now...
Has anyone else made the same change and would recommend / discourage?
I've been for a look at one earlier today which seems a really nice car. Not got many options on it but it's very low mileage for a 2015 car, I think that's more important to me as it should mean slightly less depreciation than a car that I would take over 50k miles for example.

Keen to hear any thoughts on the car or moving to an M4 in general!

My advice would be this. Just mentally prepare your self for the associated "M" costs. Hopefully any M4 you get will have a FBMWSH, if it was me I'd budget for extended warranty (exactly as you've mentioned).
The only issue I know the S55 to suffer from is the crank hub one, that can affect some modded cars.
Apart from that go test drive and see what works for you. I've got a 440i and an M2C so can tell you they're both brilliant and the S55 is a peach.
I'm guessing this will be a daily? Be warned, they can be pretty thirsty!

Bit over budget but it's a BMW auc with 7k miles. Plus 12 months warranty.

Its the move I was considering for a long time and the logical one imo
I've been watching the market and getting info for a while it seems that crank hub and premature turbo failure isnt uncommon so i think warranty is a must at least for the first year, water ingress in the convertible is also an issue
I know the brakes cost a lot to replace and the tyres are a big increase over the M235 but i found that insurance is pretty much the same for me as the F22 and the fuel consumption about the same
Budgeting for extended warranty was certainly on my plan , there are a lot around though so its the usual story of buying the best you can afford they seem to start at low 20's for the rougher ones , £30k they seem to be pretty good

To be honest the running costs of modern M cars are perfectly reasonable. I’ve been running an M6 for 2.5 years and here are the costs over 8000 miles
Full comp Warranty renewal with £250 excess - £750
Big service - £729 with a bit of haggling at BMW main dealer
Tax - £465ish as it’s post March 2017
Fuel - 24mpg real average. 20ish around town and bit of spirited driving, 30-32mpg on a long motorway run
I would expect the M4 to be marginally better in almost all respects
Be warned though prices are pretty high at the moment, if/when then drop you could find youve suffered serious depreciation making all of the other costs insignificant

If you want to (practically) keep the same running costs as the M235i then consider an original N55 M2.
Servicing through BMW value pricing is identical to the M Lite.
I am paying the same for insurance (£270) ; pads are the same. Tyres are a little bit more. Disks are quite a lot more but how often do you need them (40k road miles I guess).
Extended warranty is £995 for me fully Comp and £100 excess.
Depreciation could be similar is £ terms.

I've recently moved to a 2018 F82 M4 from a 2017 F56 Mini Cooper S(I've had a E90 330d/330i/E92 M3 in the past though). I'm a really big fan of the S55 engine because it is so punchy and torquey, and for such a relatively big and heavy car it is surprisingly good fun.
Insurance is fairly steep for me(£600) versus some of other cars I've had though. I went for a BMW AUC for the warranty and a bit of piece of mind(I've had 8 BMWs and 7 of them have been BMW AUC). I'm really happy with the car so they definitely come highly recommended from me.
