Front wheel stand?

Chaps, I bought this from EBay as the Multistrada is a tight fit in my storage box, I’m finding it almost impossible to get it to work as I can’t get much of a run at it and it’s a heavy bike.
Is it because it’s an eBay cheapie or are all the stands of this design the same?

Have you tried using the engine to drive it into the stand rather than just pushing it, very carefully obviously? I would imagine that the stands are all fairly similar in operation.
