When my mk1 MX5 returns from the garage with a fresh MOT it will be going up for sale as i'm going to be commuting more soon and its not really ideal for that

Therefore have been looking for something a little more comfortable, while still be a convertible and an automatic so my wife can drive it. As usual i'm flicking all over the place trying to narrow the car choice down, but the 640d has caught my eye as appearing to offer a good balance of refinement, performance and comfort.

Anything in particular to look for or avoid on these?

There is an EGR recall, but apart from that the 640d don’t seem to have any common faults. Pretty decent engine, and pumps better engine sounds through the speakers, so it doesn’t sound bad while driving.

Mine has never missed a beat in the last year, but I’d expect if something goes wrong it would cost a chunk. It’s a land yacht that eats up the miles, but doesn’t feel in the slightest bit sporty. It’s very capable, but just not very rewarding.

They're good cars with no real issues, the EGR can play up but that's about it.

Just make sure that it doesn't have the runflats as they destroy the ride of a proper GT car.

Loved my 640d Coupe for long drives, but let down by numb handling and unusable rear seats (I've got a young daughter).

Still think it's one of the best looking BMW's in a very long time.

LCI provided a lot of great interior improvements.

Thanks for the feedback.

The do seem to provide great value for money considering the size, etc.

I really can't decide what should be next and the wife is losing patience. There are too many options, but i've got to the point of do i really need to spend £30k on a car - i could spend half that, get something like the 640/Z4/Boxster/etc etc and spend the rest of holidays (when we can).

I like the 6er, but just to put it out there - you could probably get a newer 435 for that kind of money. Hard top and a bit more modern, not as special to sit in.

Or if you're any good at finding hen's teeth, an Infiniti G with the 3.7 engine from the 370Z - almost certain never to meet another one!

I did 70k miles in a 640d Coupe(it was completely reliable) and I think that they are a lovely car. Everytime I see one it makes me miss mine, such a great looking thing to my eyes.

The steering is poor on them though and you do notice the size of them in car parks etc. The runflats are horrendous on the 20" wheels over pot holes/broken tarmac, but they are fine on smooth roads though.
