I’ve been looking at a new car to replace my 120D. I am 21 years old with 2 years no claims..I have had insurance cancelled due to stupidly getting a black box and then speeding..so some of the quotes I’m getting aren’t the best! I currently pay just under 1k on 120D. I’m looking for something reasonably quick preferably Sub 6 seconds 0-60 but also something not too crazy on insurance! I’ve been looking at a range of things to give you an idea of the stuff I like: Jag Xk. (5k to insure the 4.2), M235i (2.6k to insure), 135I coupe (4K to insure), 125i coupe (1.6k to insure)- not sure it’ll be fun enough though.. 640d and 640I (3.5k to insure) I am leaning towards the jag as it seems every other decent car I see is a BMW or Mercedes or Audi these days. Not really a fan of Golf’s either they seem overpriced for what they are. The only downside to the Xk is the insurance price doesn’t seem quite right spending half the cars value to insure it! I’ve been contemplating just remapping my 120D and wait a little longer for quotes to drop after maybe 3 years no claims? Any suggestions as to what I should be looking at or even advise on what you would do in my situation. Not too fussed about fuel economy as I’m aware majority of ‘performance’ cars aren’t the best on fuel. I’m looking for petrol as I’d love to have a nice sounding car but it’s seeming Diesels are better value for money when it comes to performance.

Open to any ideas. Preferably something I will walk away from with a smile. E.g Jag or Maserati type thing.

I will appreciate all responses smile

You must be well off or a bit mad to consider insuring a Jag at £5000 insurance. You could try other things not associated with young drivers like Volvo, Lexus or Infiniti or maybe something like a VW Passat CC, but I wouldn’t be looking for crazy performance just yet. Something in the region of 200bhp you could probably be happy with and might just find the insurance reasonable. Typically for a young lad you’d be talking Fiesta ST, Peugeot 208 GTI, Mini Cooper S and things like that but that might not work in your case

haha yeah slightly mad I guess you could say lol, also yes my income is probably quite a lot more than the typical 21 year old but yeah I’m looking to ideally be paying 3k tops for insurance ideally but can stretch if needed. I like the coopers but they seem very common too! I want something a bit more fancy that’s why was leaning towards a jag but the insurance is slightly putting me off. At the moment it’s looking like the 125i and getting it remapped could be a good option as it’s pretty cheap insurance for someone that’s had cancelled insurance! Or maybe the m235i.
I appreciate your suggestions thank you!

Why was your insurance 'cancelled'?

I've had a 640d and a Mini Cooper S and I really liked them both in their own way. I really like your suggestion regarding the M235i though, and I think that they are a great all round performance car.

Firstly everyone has done silly things it's part of life, what you need to do is look at quick cars that don't appear on the insurance radar as high risk for a 21 year old that has had his insurance cancelled.

Yes you'd be mad to pay 4k for insurance, obviously waiting another year is the sensible option but if you want to change then I'd set a max of 2k & see what cars make the list.

With this in mind I'd be looking at leftfield/less popular warm/hot hatches, don't get to fixated on 0-60 everything listed below is swift/fun & dependent on circumstances they can come back with sensible insurance numbers.

Yeah my dad has had a 640D and loved it but I’m not sure about getting another diesel as I want it to sound good! I was surprised by the m235i insurance quote also so that’s definitely a possibility also!

Thanks very much! I appreciate the effort put into this with links much appreciated - my favourite out of those is the 228i which I haven’t considered but it’s certainly a strong possibility now! Thanks - will check a quote now, I’d there’s not much between this and the m235i is there any reason that I’m not considering that means I shouldn’t get the m235i over the 228i?

Just the possible insurance costs if they're close then the 235i is the pick but if it comes back a decent amount cheaper, then it's worth considering.

Thinking maybe a 428I? Anyone owned one or know what they’re like? I like the look of them

just realised the 125i coupe is considerably cheaper and similar insurance to the 428i, I think I prefer this looks of the 125i coupe too.
Is there any reason I should go for the 428i over the 125i??

The 428i will be a nicer car inside but if you're happy with the 125i then go for it. smile

The only thing I’m concerned about is if I’ll be disappointed with the performance, I’ve watched some videos and they sound nice but I guess I’ll have to test one to see

I think I’ve narrowed it down to between a 428i and 430d now.

Should probably get the diesel as I do 15k+ miles a year but would love a petrol as never owned one and want a decent sounding car but there seems to be way more 430D in good spec and also the 430D is faster 0-60 as far as I’m aware

The 428i won't sound that good & if it's a shootout between that & a 430d then it's the 30d that I'd be picking.

I’m slightly older than yourself at 25 with one claim for crashing at your age on ice.

I personally refused to pay £2.8K to insure an M4 in January. I find all reasonably quick BMW cars if you are under 30 to be ridiculous on insurance.

For comparison my Golf GTI costs me £500, an R or S3 is £550 and RS5 was £650. An M140i is £3.2K and M2 was £3K.

My advice is be sensible with your money and get the house and investments sorted rather than blowing it on insurance. Far more people are impressed by me owning my own home than what car I drive.

Ah that’s a lot! I appreciate the advice thanks! I actually have quite a good amount invested and I have found a car I can comfortably afford which I am going to look at tomorrow! The insurance is £1700 a year which isn’t too bad bearing in mind I had my insurance cancelled previously. This is the one I’m looking at! Seems decent spec and mileage for the money https://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/202105253057571...
