Seeking wisdom from the PH hive mind yet again, I’ve been seeking a cool estate for ages and landed pretty squarely on a Subaru Legacy. However I now have a need to tow ~2 tonnes on occasion and I’m not sure if I need to (literally) broaden my thinking. So the criteria is:

-cheap
-comfy
-nice interior
-slushbox
-cruise
-heated seats
-2t towing capacity
-either reasonable economy, or an engine that justifies going without it smile

If anyone can talk me out of an L322 I’d appreciate that biggrin estate/anything a bit less gargantuan is preferable within the towing constraints, but dull offerings will not be entertained, ie; qashqai and it’s pitiful ilk.. zzzz

Cheers beer

L322 or Disco3 it ticks all of the boxes since one of them does not include reliability. Or possibly a shogun.

A Freelander 2 may well pull 2T

Porsche Cayenne S. 4.5V8, tow up to 3.5t and can have air or spring suspension, whichever would suit you best.

Big, but worth it wink

Mercedes E class estates of S211 (03-09) and S212 (09+) vintage have a towing capacity of 2.1t (1.9t with manual transmission). The 4wd versions of VW/Audi/Skoda similar size estate cars also generally are homologated to tow 2t, 1.8t if 2wd.

X5 4.6is.

Has all of the above apart from the fuel economy, but the drive must certainly justifies it.

Having had a Diesel L322 before, the X5 is simply streets ahead in every department. Well, unless you want to do any serous off roading.

At 5k I'd be taking a good look at the R Class:

R320 L cdi Sport

Now the looks aren't the strongest point but everything else ticks your boxes.

If you want an SUV then the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland would be my pick over the RR as an overall package but the RR will feel more classy.
