What car, short term, 10k

We’ve been a 1 car household for several months now due to covid.

With things starting to pick up, I’m planning to order a new company car. But, various preferred options are looking to be 3-6 months factory order.

As such, I’m looking for something to fill the 3-6 month gap. Requirements are:

- Decent size (VW golf size or larger)
- max 2 years old as did want something with manufacturers warranty remaining
- max 30k miles
- not too fussed on gadgets

Some initial options were
Peugeot 308
Skoda Octava 1.0

All thoughts or alternatives appreciated.

Nice simple list of criteria, at the £10k mark I'd probably look across to Hyundai of Kia and get an older car, taking advantage of their 5 and 7 year warranties, respectively.

A £10K car for a short period sounds like an expensive way to go about it to me.

I'd just have a look for a much cheaper car.

I'm sure the OP has thought about that but I'd have to agree, for such a short space of time I'd look to pick something presentable up for half that with a full years MOT, save £5k and lose a smaller amount when its moved on after 6 months.

Thanks for the suggestions, I hadn’t even thought of Hyundai.

Yeah I’ve thought about the likely loss over the 6 months, and I’m happy to take it so that I get something decent (transporting a 6 month old on occasion) and that I can just stick back to the local dealer for repair as required.

We are all different, but what difference does a 6 month old child make and what repairs are you envisaging for a nearly new car over 6 months?

My last few cars have needed nothing beyond basic servicing and brakes over a number of years to beyound 100K miles.

Agreed if buying and selling back to a dealer, you'll take a hit on the valuation. If you're buying and selling privately then you're only taking the depreciation hit over 6months, I really wouldn't expect that to be much at all - Though obviously more than if you buy a £500 shed but not everyone wants to drive around in something of that price bracket.

Point of information: There are cars available at between £500 and £10,000

Older than a 2018 but due to the fact you'll get a years Warranty on them which will be a nice selling point, the Megane in Signature Nav spec would be my pick:

Budget £10k, petrol, one 6yr old who loves his bikes so we need a decent load space and a bit of comfort for longer trips, been looking at 2008, 308, Leon etc. Interested to see the replies.

sounds like kia is gonna be best with a 7 year warrenty, the 2018< proceed looks really nice

I can get both my 7 and 5 year olds' bikes in the boot of this at the same time with no wheel removal etc. Obviously depends on bike sizes etc.

Edit - sorry just noticed you said petrol. There are petrols available but a bit of budget creep may be required...

Yeh I like those, a mate has one.

Did find a few Mazda 3 petrols in budget approved used, they look nice too.

We live between Bristol and Bath and both are bringing in diesel zones plus the mileage my wife does which is all local journeys doesn’t really warrant a diesel.

I had a hire car Peugeot 308 design edition. It was loaded with pan roof and nice seats etc. It was December registered on a 70 plate, near on 20k new, wife liked it so looked how much they were and it was £11k at a dealer, go for a year old one and they are under £10k.
Shouldn't lose too much more off that

We had a nose around a 2018 308 at the local Peugeot dealer, seemed a nice car and a step up from the 207 that we currently have. Didn’t test drive it at that point though. Think we need to go back and compare it to a 2008 which she also likes but I don’t want the 82bhp one it would have to be the 110bhp one which are rarer. Swindon and Newport Peugeot had one each in stock a week ago but they’ve gone now.

I quite like the Megane, haven’t had a Renault since I dabbled in a Ph1 Clio 172.
