My 25,000 mile 2003 engine was suffering low-ish oil pressure and at the 12k service done last year near Oxford the proprietor reckoned it was probably an original crank journal/shell misfit so we decided to leave. Anyway after less than 500 miles later a tinging/rumbling has been diagnosed as a halftime bearing so it’s engine out time!
Whilst it’s out I’m having a rebuild to get the pressure up, hopefully sort out lumpy idling and generally refresh and get a warranty, and I am sincerely hoping they’ll have it out this week as it’s been there a while already !
In addition to the usual replacement items is there anything I should go for upgrade/improvement ? I’m not going for increased capacity as I don’t think I needs it, but are there any useful mods or upgrades I should suggest if they aren’t offered ? I’ve read about adding an oil feed to the halftime bearing and rear cam, different followers etc so wondering what the current thinking is on all this.

Sounds a bit of an odd 12k service.. playing devils advocate, was there no noise from the half time bearing when you took the car to them, did they tighten it on the service? "Lumpy idling".. what did they do on the service, throttle body balance, inspection of high tension side, record shim clearance and remediate.
Low oil pressure is pretty much the nature of the beast.. is the said service agent trying to tell you its the bottom end giving you low oil pressure.
Id be tempted to give Power a bell, see what backlog Dom has.

Hmm. Well it’s already with another reputable establishment. Not too sure about the shim situation I had a record of all previous shim adjustments when I bought the car but unfortunately didn’t get the update with the latest 12k service. Yes he reckons it’s the bottom end - apparently some cars were built a little slack on tolerances. After the service it was 2psi hot (and bleeping) on the way home which was tight buttock stuff but it turned out to be a duff sender as they hadn’t done a hot running test after servicing. I don’t know about what else was done on the induction side or tightening the bearing on the service - I didn’t know that was a thing but I’ll ask.
I’ll have a chat with them later this week when the engine is (hopefully) stripped and update.

Should they ?Who did you take it to KwikFit

Possibly a 'spun bearing' if the bottom end is knackered which is unusual, probably worth biting the bullet and having the whole lot rebuilt if that is the case, spill the beans old chap, did you take it to Halfords ? Good luck with that one matey
It’s in for a rebuild, as it makes a lot of sense going through the engine while it’s out. I’ll know more within a week when it’s stripped so I’ll update then with a sorry-arsed list of faults.
I’m just interested in what mods are worth doing at the same time and what aren’t.....

The oil levels typically measured when hot... but I guess that’s a minor detail to these chaps.
Who did you take it to KwikFit
I think the clue is ‘near Oxford’Who did you take it to KwikFit

Straight 4+4=

May the force be with V6 otherwise this could turn into one of special saga threads

You’d know a spun crank bearing. The noise would be very obvious or it’d just seize.
More like the factory thought they were building a top fueler so went loose one the clearance. They weren’t so worried about the regular rebuilds

Makes me wonder whatever happened to RG, only a decade ago they were a flagship dealer, i remember going to their open day and trying out the T350 FFF demo car, how times have changed, can you shed any light on this ?
Tell you what, start a topic by yourself and stop snide comments on others. How about that?
Update : Engine rebuild, the half time bearing had disintegrated and low oil pressure from a knackered oil pump plus one main bearing getting a bit thin along with loose factory tolerances. No bore wear and not much else to report......
Cant wait to get it back, it'll be in full use in June
