My car recently developed a knocking noise from the top end (15000 miles on clock) 02 plate
dealer tells me now after inspection its the camshaft has suffered wear !! and engine needs to come out, get boxed up and go back to tvr in blackpool for rebuild and replair !!

15 hrs to remove and 15 hrs labout to reinstate into the hole ontop of what tvr bill me for carriage as well as repair

kinda looking at £2-2500 repair on a car with next to no mileage anyone had similar or any ideas..i do find it ironic when newer cars have unlimited milage warranties and if suseptable to this problem

one very irrate consumer.. to think i was just about to buy a sagaris !!

Try contacting TVR Power and see if you can dump the car with them and have them do the work. Might work out quite a bit cheaper.

Sorry to hear of your woes.

Aren't these cars OHC? Thus not needing to remove the engine to replace the camshaft?

150 quid to transporter it to Power might be worth the saving

The whole engine comes out so it can be washed inside to clean out any metal particals that may be in there.

Sorry to hear about your woes. You may want to bang out those numbers on the calculator again. 30hrs engine in and out at say £50/hr is £1,500. Do you expect a rebuild inc new cam to be £500 to £1,000? As mentioned above I would check out TVR Power and AutoCraft (sp?) but maybe sit down first. Good luck. Jonathan

Don't know how true it is, but my local TVR dealer told me that the factory will now supply the parts required for rebuilds to all main TVR dealers.
Might be worth checking out. My rebuild had to go back to the factory but was covered on insurance.

Rodger, really really sorry to hear of your Tam woes, testing times for even the most dedicated TVR nut

Just a thought, would it be possible to get the rebuild done under your insurance, somehow? It does seem odd that those parts are worn so bad they need changing with that low mileage! I would at least write a courtious letter to TVR asking if they could in any way help with the cost, as you have obviously got faulty parts which should not have worn like that!

Out of interest, why would it take 15 hours to remove the engine? I understand why it might take a little longer to put it back in and set it up though. I'm not disputing that it might be tricky, but 15 hours is 2 solid days work or 1 full day with 2 mechanics.

Remove bonnet, drain oil. Disconnect radiator/oil tank piping and ancilliaries. Maybe remove steering/aircon piping bits if they're in the way, Raise car on ramp, unbolt gearbox/prop mountings and lower out the way if needed, attach engine crane unbolt and lift away.

The first car I ever removed an engine from only took about 6 hours and I was (am) a total amateur without a ramp or proper lifting gear. (OK, so it was an old Ford, but the basics are the same.)

To be honest I would consider getting legal, if you bought from a dealer... The consumer protection act does i beleive still apply, something like ANY good has to be fit for purpose up to 6 years from sale.

Clearly 15,000 miles on a modern car engine IS not acceptable.... Assuming maintained according to manufacturers schedule. Even if it IS a design fault,, IT is the DEALER that has to sort it out NOT the manufacturer.

As an aside 15 hours to take the engine out is laughable.

This is not correct, you are mixing two laws and their application.

The Consumer Protection Act is a law that enables consumers to claim for injuries and death caused by faulty goods.

The Sale of Goods and Services Act is the Act you meant and the six years (five in Scotland) is the maximum time frame for commencing legal action. There is no specific figure for the life of a good, for example an oil filter would be reasonably expected to last one year, a household white good such as a washing machine five years or so.

Hope this helps a bit.

Sorry, that's the one i meant... I am aware that a number of people have gone down this route, and I believe succesfully....

15 k miles in 2-3 years is hard to defend for any car dealer/manufacturer, especially in a £40k car.

ironic thing is the warranty i had expired and renewal came in which i was going to purchase but then firm wrote to me following day saying sorry "we are unable to warranty ur tvr" !! kinda lucky white heather i guess

Perhaps thats fob off the customer conversation number 1, followed by 2, 3, 4...

I would not accept this, appear at the dealer on a busy day with lots of customers, and be ultra polite, calm, profesional and say that this is not acceptable....

Go forearmed with a little bit of consumer advice, you ask around quietly on pistonheads, I'm sure other people may be able to give you some pointers offline, about what happened to them with.

You would not be washed hands with like this at BMW, Porsche or Noble (an example of a small brit manufacturer) . I believe - legally - the issue you have is with the dealer, as they sold it to you - but usually the manufacturer and dealers sort things out between themselves regarding costs/fault - imho .

Assuming of course you did not buy privately...

Depending on what they find when the engine is taken apart, the bill could potentially run into many thousands,,, and then what warranty would you get on the rebuild ( a year?, 12k miles?) where if they build to the same spec - could it happen again?
Or if they have changed spec, so that it doesn't, is that just not an admission of a problem...

This is not a speed six engine knock thread, I would do exactly the same with any car dealer/manufacture in the circumstances as described.
