Got a budget of upto £27500

After a modern family SUV with plenty of tech and toys.

Prefer more subdue colours, dont do big miles but space for 4 adults and a medium ish sized dog.

Thinking xc60 but does anyone have any other opinions?

Well, pretty much all off them have a lot of tech and toys, will fit 4 adults and a medium dog.

What else do you want out of it? Used or new? Cheap to run? Performance?

Toyota RAV4 - new plugin will be swift and reliable.
Kia Sportage or Sorento (larger) - reliable and 7 year warranty and quite nice inside.
Porsche Macan - quick, fun(ish) but not as great reliability and porsche tax on servicing etc,
Lexus RH450H - swift, luxurious, well built, reliable etc.

To be honest, I could pretty much suggest every SUV going as they all meet your requirements above.

Skoda Kodiaq SE DCT in quartz grey. Very restrained/expensive looking colour. New one for that budget.

I would spend £10k on some sort of family car and the rest on something fun like an Elise or a Caterham.

£27k is a lot to spend on something boring.

I personally think the XC60 is the best of the lot at that price, followed by the Tiguan, which and to come with decent tech too.

Tucson is worth a look as is the 3008.

I've been looking for similar. Looking for petrol and AWD this cuts down the options.
I've had test drives in Karoq and Kodiaq as I'm replacing a Yeti which has been very good, both were fine, seven seats in the Kodiaq if that's a consideration. AWD petrol Karoqs are very rare.
Now looking at Volvo's, the XC 60 can be had for the same money as the XC 40 More choice of 60's as the 40 is a younger model, both go well as T5 sub 7 second 0-60
All the 60's were over £40k new so are stuck with £455 VED for the first 5 years.
I've been looking for over a year, the pandemic has really screwed the used car market!

Subaru Forester XT (turbo) 240Bhp loads of room and plenty quick for a SUV and the petrol engines are bulletproof.

Go test drive one and then go test drive other SUV’s......but is has to be the XT turbo version...you’re basically getting a WRX that’s practical....

Or an smax or galaxy....do you really need an SUV when an MPV will likely be more practical?

Cars should be more than what's just practical, especially to us car enthusiasts.

I've driven a 2019 XC60, and I preferred the Mercedes GLC350d I have for it's V6 3.0 diesel over the quite rough and ready 4 cylinder diesel engine that is in the Volvo. I did however love the 2019 XC90(4 cylinder petrol) that I had for a week as a loan car, but I guess I would really because that is a car from the class above though. The Volvos do have a really nice interior ambience about them I reckon.

There's no real difference dynamically between an SUV and an MPV it's Just the form factor. Looks are subjective obviously.

Would a "fully loaded" S-max for instance be a lesser proposition than an XC Volvo.....they occupy the same sort of price point. A lot depends if you have more than 2 kids though. Once you breach that magic number you are fked for car choice.

Saying that I picked up a 2017 ford galaxy recently and I'd say it is almost the perfect family car. For my needs anyway...3 kids, dog, needs to tow a caravan (removable tow hitch).

Yes I guess something like that would do the job, but I would need to own something fun as well

Or not a lot of money, depending on one's budget. Besides, I reckon having a circa £30k fun car is not incompatible with having a circa £30k recent, practical, roomy and comfortable car for family / dog use.

New, and a crossover - we've been reasonably happy with our AWD auto turbo Kia Sportage for around that budget. Not one for the badge snobs but it seems capable enough, decent interior, decent warranty and after-sales.
