Having had company cars most of my life, then purchased privately, my next purchase will possibly be from a main dealer, so very limited experience.

Price is £20,000 for a 6 year old car. Similar car can be bought from non-franchised dealer for circa £1,000 less and privately for circa £1,750 less. This issue is the private sales and non-franchised dealers are all 100's miles away for the very specific car I want. The dealer is just down the road from me.

How much flexibility to dealers have on their screen price, or is is just a case of accepting their price and trying to get other things thrown in?

It depends on the dealers / group stock of this model. Used car prices are strong at the moment . I got 10% of a used Golf TDI which was up for £9,995 , but they had several & plenty more in the group stock of similar age & mileage.

My experience has been that they don't want to move much (guess with the internet there's a lot of competition to price it keenly from the outset) and their negotiation is basically reducing the price by removing the paint protection, GAP, etc that they present in the initial "here's what it'll cost you" total. If you have a px, you may have a bit more wiggle room, but with most being punted to auction, don't count on it. If the car you're looking to buy is desirable, they may well stand firm.

Saying that, if you don't ask, you don't get so always worth trying wink

You can always ask.

There doesn't seem much room for negotiations at the moment with 2nd hand cars but it's always worth a try.

If they won't move on price try with free servicing or a decent warranty thrown in.

Is it particularly rare or sought after?

I didn't think it was, Jeep Grand Cherokee in Overland or Summit spec, but good ones seem to sell very quickly, so I suspect there'll be limited wriggle room. I will however give it a good go.
