Ignition issues...

Hi all, I hope someone can help solve a problem with my wife's mk1 BBR conversion:
The ignition cranks over without catching, but the real problem is, it continues after removing the ignition key! It will then carry on until the battery dies, though the battery gets disconnected before this happens.
I've swapped the ignition switch from a working car but this has made no difference.
Although the car had been laid up for a while (on a trickle charger), it started fine a couple of weeks ago and the only work carried out recently was the fitment of a new wing.
Any ideas where I can start looking please?
