Toto honouring his promise to Romain that he'll get to drive an F1 car again.

It would be an achievement to hit something at Paul Ricard.

Hopefully the contract for this this stunt states clearly that he agrees he will never set foot in an F1 car again.

In a race anyway.

The dude has been a liability for a while now.

Remember his 2012?

Well done to Toto and the Mercedes team, for giving Romain the opportunity of not finishing his F1 career in a flaming wreck.

Good grief there are some mean comments in just the short life so far of this thread. Surely the only important things of note is Toto being a top chap and honouring is word and a positive end for Grosjean to bow out at speed.

Just take the positive some times folks, no need for any negative.

What is the point of this, just publicity for merc.

Gro had at least two years wasting an f1 seat so I'm not sure why Toto had to give him one last drive they could have given this test to an up and coming driver or a female for a real opportunity but alas they give it to a journeyman.

Fixed that wink

Seriously though, classy move from Toto & Merc. I hope it gives the guy the chance to close this chapter of his career in the right way.

Mainly because it's a nice gesture for someone that had a horrific accident that made many in motorsport with young children (like Toto) consider what is important in life.

Every day I think social media and forums have sunk as low as they can but every day I'm reminded how many small minded people with bitter lives there are.

What ever you think of Grosjean's driving is irrelevant. It was so close to being a very tragic story if he wasn't able to get out of that cockpit when the crash happened.

This was to honor a pledge made by Toto as it became clear the crash that almost ended Grosjean's life would certainly end his F1 career.

Publicity stunt... not so much, but yes there will be coverage because of it. I think it really shows that Toto is a man of his word, good on him for making it possible.

Did Cyril Abiteboul ever honor his word to Ricciardo and get the tattoo for him getting on the podium... nope, not as far as I'm aware.

It’s not a test drive or anything like that. It is Toto and Mercedes giving a guy who had a miraculous escape from death an opportunity for his last drive in F1 to be pleasurable. A great gesture.

Because the bloke nearly burned to death in an F1 car as his last act in the sport and he would like to finish driving a good car at his home grand prix.

And it's a nice thing for Mercedes to do. They don't have to, they could get far more/better publicity letting someone else drive one of their cars I suspect.

I don’t want to live in the parallel universe in which Grosjean died or suffered life changing injuries.

Fortunately, in this universe, Grosjean will make a full recovery. Through his career and then Drive to Survive, he is practically a meme. He is famed for his avoidable crashes. Let’s not lose our sense of humour about that.

One small bonus with this, he'll get to wear the helmet his kids designed for him in an F1 car that he couldn't do at the end of last year.

It is indeed a nice gesture and Toto shows once again that he is a class act.

However, it doesn't detract from the fact that Grosjean has no business racing an F1 car.
I wish him no ill will at all - that accident was horrific, but it was also entirely of his own making, albeit the flames were out of his control and the freak factor that made that crash so serious.

He earned his reputation and the nickname crashjean for a reason, and plenty of drivers - former and current - spoke out about him all the way back to his first season - when he received a ban for his dangerous driving. He also nearly received others in recent years.
He was a danger to himself and others - that isn't bitterness, its fact.
