All the goodness of the Yaris, without the downside of having to say you own a Yaris?!
This for me is a much better looking car - if I’d bought a Yaris and this one pans out as it looks here, I think I’d be making the jump from one to the other for sure.

Both are great looking cars, it'll be interesting to see how they compare performance wise. Honestly, I wouldn't give a toss saying I own a Yaris. I think I'd kind of prefer it, 3 doors, the original GR released, and I never thought I'd see a sporty Yaris, let alone a 4 wheel drive, petrol turbo, these days. The corolla will be of interest to the people needing 4 doors and a little bit bigger inside. I miss the days of the fun Japanese cars, Nissan don't have much on offer, Honda pretty much just the CTR, do Mazda do anything interesting? It's great to see Toyota releasing these cars for a small market, and see them doing it successfully. Long may it continue.

Power to weight wise and based on the numbers quoted, the Corolla should actually be faster at 220/tonne rather than the Yaris’ 210/tonne. The ‘all the goodness of a Yaris without having to say you drive a Yaris’ comment I made was a bit tongue in cheek - mainly based on the fact it’s a Yaris being probably the single most common complaint I’ve seen spoken of the Yaris since it’s release.
It’s maybe not an issue for most folk, but like it or not, there are a significant number who see the fact it’s a Yaris as a tick in the cons list despite its many pros.

Anyone buying a car based on a badge (and there are many like that) will probably dismiss it, but I try to avoid people like that. Most of the people I know who are interested in cars wouldn't bat an eyelid if you said you drove a bog standard original Yaris. In fact a few sunk lower for a year or so, coming from Golf R's, S3's, 200 SX and others. It was a case of getting a good offer on the car they had, and needing something until they found another car they wanted. Or in the case of the 200 SX, it was blowing the engine on the first lap of a track day. The Yaris is without a doubt the most appealing car to me since the end of the 2000's Evo VI and WRX STI Ver 6. Makes very little difference to me as I’m in the market for neither - but if I were, I’d pick the Corolla, purely based on the fact I think it’s a better looking car, with a heavy nod to the touring car version which has been so successful the last few years.
No one knows how "gazoo'd" this Corolla is going to be compared to the Yaris. Will it have the driveline of the Yaris (with the extra horses) only? Or will it have the extra body strengthening of the Yaris? Carbon composite roof? Aluminium panels? Big brakes? Suspension geometry? All the Tommy and Akio touches? I think this Corolla is more for the Golf R folk.

I'd be amazed if it were anything other than a Golf R competitor. The GR Yaris was made for a very specific purpose and has several compromises that you either can deal with or cant. It makes no sense making a slightly larger version of the same car without addressing some of those compromises as it doesn't have to deliver for a specific motorsport program. I assume they'll claim it'll be slightly faster on paper than the GR Yaris and in reality it won't be given how much faster the GR Yaris is than the claims on paper.

IMHO the standard Corolla is actually quite a nice looking car these days. That GR version? Lovely, especially in that metallic red, I always thought it was a shame they didn't use it on the GT86.
I'd definitely have a hot Corolla like that over a Golf R. Assuming this happens, let's hope they nail it as well as they apparently have with the GR Yaris and that it's another roaring success. Hopefully other manufacturers will start to get the message that there's a market for fun enthusiasts cars as much as there is for all the hybrid/electric models.
