So with the latest crypto bubble I seem to have turned my 2017 4k into 40k. Luck, stupidity but here we are. Now from £800 low in 2018 (yep 80% loss untill start of 2020 crypto is not a pension plan), to it hitting 6k April last year I have been saying i will cash out and buy a nice car or bike. So to be clear I may not cash out, it may go to 0 tomorrow but end of day a load of 1s and 0s on screen is useless unless you one day use it. So with all that in mind here is my criteria

1)when i open the garage and look at it, it must make me smile.

2) I would like to go fast not go anywhere so Range Rover etc are out

3) I would like it to feel special even if its not so M4 great car...but its basically a 420m sport to most people.

4) I don't want to give Rishi a penny so an extra 300 a year just for a car I use as a 3rd choice is not an option. Happy to pay 500 tax not 800

So far I am thinking

A. 911 997 coupe as basically wanted a Porsche since i was 5. But looking at then now they don't seem special

B. Masarsti Grantourismo, currently favourite option they look and sound amazing, bit worried I would need another 40k to run it

C. 718 Boxster Cayman, they all look really nice in red, bit meh

D. DB9....they look amazing.....15 year old one means 15 year old interior might annoy me

E. Audi R8, its a supercar, Its a small 2 sear version of my wifes Q7

F. Mustang, V8, bright colour, 4 seats, is it special

Help me I am useless at making a decision

You could leave it where it is, To The Moon etc, & be shopping for a wrapped Lambo in 6 months time?

Mmmm, good problem to have.

As the money was an investment (gamble) I would possibly go for something that reflected that and buy something that's not going to suffer huge depreciation or possibly even appreciate in value a little. Maybe an oldish Alfa or perhaps a S2000 would appeal? Maybe even spend some of the money on a car and some on improving that car?

In in a similar position, I've been buying crypto since 2014. I've had as much as £120k worth, and then crashed down to £2k for a long time, hopefully it's on the up again. I'll def be taking profits this time as I have been way too greedy so far.

As said above, you have to pay CGT over £12k that you take out, unless you want to move to Portugal or something like that!

I'm not sure I'd buy a car with it, though I'd love a Giulia quadrifoglio. The problem is that if you do buy one, in 6 months your qf could have been 10m.

My plan is to put whatever I make into a farm, that way it shouldn't be something I regret.

Whatever you decide, you'll kick yourself in 3 months if you sell your Crypto now.

Sell half, keep half. Buy a smaller car. If the half in crypto shoots up change the car. If it crashes you still have a car and maybe enough to buy some tulips as an investment! laugh

I’ll probably feel differently tomorrow but today I’d buy an Alfa quadrifoglio.

You haven't said anything of your home situation, but I'd be putting the cash in to my house, part funding an extension or what not if there was scope. Do it right and your money will appreciate further.

If it has to have wheels and prices post pandemic won't be if help to you generally, but I'd be going after a tasty classic, something that may appreciate, something that may turn heads for years to come and something that isn't trying to be a comfortable do everything car.

Friend of mine has imported old 911's from all over the place, Mexico, Texas and Hawaii. Usually makes a tidy profit flicking them on in the UK too. So as a 911 is on your list, why not go for an old classic 911/912? If you fancy a project, go in at 20/25k and spend the rest on restoring it.

Most of the cars you mentioned are just showy cars with little about them, they'll make you smile for a month.

Other choices for me would be something nuts like a Caterham/Ariel or KTM. A car that's an occasion (for you, the driver).

Keep it in Crypto in this current bull run and you'll make way more than you'll ever make on a house - provided of course you've got some decent coins.

+1, that way you're guaranteed to end up benefiting whichever way the dice fall. We've surely all seen enough over the last few years to know that it's equally likely to double as halve in value.

Anyway, I like your choices; something with two seats is likely to give more in pure driving terms, but obviously less practical. I feel like I'd lean towards the R8 of those, but quite a few are tempting.

Generally if you want a special car as a third car I'd suggest looking for slightly older cars as they're more special and will hold value. And don't incur the top rates of road tax.

TVR Tuscan or T350
Lotus Esprit
Honda NSX
Dodge Viper
Corvette C6

these are all cars that will be exciting to look at, an event to drive, and are unlikely to be mistaken for a 420d. Plus likely to rise in value.

Thanks for the great suggestions seems I am on the right track for a 3rd car. I have driven a caterham and they are great but as it will be a 3rd car it needs to make me smile just looking at it.

Re my home, or other investments etc, crypto came about as I had saved some cash for a motorcycle by keeping the change from my daily coffee an sandwiches etc or the occasional £10 lotto win. From about 2015 to 2017 every bit of spare change went in a jar and eventually I had about 4k. Heard about crypto and in 2017 like many bought some it went up bought some more it went down massively. Basically I was not bothered this was cash I would have spent on a mars bar on the train platform or a 3rd coffee...waiting 5 years and its all turned around. I have a house, a rental too and I am self employed I do ok not rich, not poor ok. So crypto is a chance to buy something I don't need I can't justify normally etc.

An yes I am guilty of I will sell at 10k, 20k, 30k etc but 40k less the CGT that Rishi will want buys something fun.

The mustang and bike is a good call, as is the A110 but thats above 40k so not there yet. Masarsti have always seemed cool in a sort of Italian Aston way.

You can still get a Granturismo & the bike, the trick is to workout your journey type.
If it's mainly town work then go for the S if it's more open then the MC Shift is the pick, don't be tempted by the 4.2 the 4.7 is a much better package.

Wow, handed seen second hand prices for these - sorry, just see that cheapest on Autotrader/ebay is still £43k! Blimey!
