Would I be mad for considering this Mondeo with only 238k on the clock.

22 services in the book
Clutch/DMF at 160k
Timing belt would be due in 12k miles ( more than 2 yrs away for me). Last done at 125k miles in 2018.

Madness to think this would carry on working for a couple of years?

I’m guessing this is an MK4?

I bought one in 2015 with £170k on the clock (2.0 tdci tit x). I kept it 4 years and serviced it every 10k myself. I got rid as it got into a habit of not starting and I decided it was time to upgrade. It had 250k on it.

With a car of that mileage you have to accept you’ll need to maintain it. As an example the last MOT cost me £340 (can’t remember what it needed). Other notable costs over the 4 years were 1 new brake calliper, new air con compressor (that was in the first year so I had it swapped knowing I’d be keeping the car for a while), exhaust back box then the usual consumables.

The previous owner spent a bit on the car a few months before selling it (one of the reasons I bought it!). Clutch, tyres and some other bits.

Just seen the link. I don’t know much about the 2.2.

It's a 2013 2.2 Tit X Sport. The word "this" in the OP is a hyperlink to the AT ad.

I have a farm holiday in Cornwall coming up next month so the need to get something fit for purpose (CMax dying, E91 too small) has become more pressing. I missed out on a nice 2.0tdci TitX earlier this week. The dealer called to say it was sold just as I was setting off!

I am set on a mk4.5 Tit X by the way. Not actually fussed about it being a Sport or a 2.2 but this one did look interesting despite the miles. It has a year's ticket. I would be interested at nearer £2k as a pure punt. It's possible it's a real triggers broom at that mileage.

I also have an eye on a non sport 2.0tdci Tit X at 158k with new timing belt (allegedly). That one is £3k before haggle although it has been on ebay for a while now.

I was thinking of doing a round trip to see both after the bank hol.

I’m sure they’ll be others along with more ideas. I’ve always liked the Mondeo.
At that price I suppose you’re always running the risk of picking up bills no matter what you buy. All you can do is try to find one that’s been looked after (like you have).

I remember with mine I’d made my mind up that I wasn’t going to have the timing chain done again. 125k intervals if I remember rightly.

I always swerved the autos as well.
When I changed mine I was looking at the 2.0 with 163bhp for a while. Looked like the best for pace & economy.

I ended up buying the mk5 1.5 tdci. Very comfortable but just too slow (a lack of low down torque).

You are doing less than 6k a year and considering a diesel? That would be enough for me get a petrol one. You will get more for your money and less complicated/ expensive components to go wrong.

The car in the link does look tidy. But it is at a garage so will have been tarted up to sell. I have driven a few Mondeo and they are a nice steer

Maybe somewhat of a boring non-PH answer but can't you just hire a car for your holiday?..as you would if you were holidaying abroad..

You're right of course I could. Will fill e91 to rafters and we have the roofbox of course if push comes to shove. Also point noted about considering a petrol, although they are powershift only for the 2.0t engine. Looks like chap has sold the intergalactic 2.2 as it has expired on AutoTrader.
