What to do with a broken (but decent) TV
Discussion
I was a numpty on Saturday and accidently broke the panel on my 'good' TV (43" 4k set from 2017); cracked the LCD panel after dropping a 65g nut and bolt on it. I've already made a claim on my home insurance and received pay out to purchase a replacement; I thought they might try to fix it, but whatever, the pay out was pretty decent and I can get a Samsung 8000 series to replace it which is pretty much like-for-like so I'm ok, apart from feeling weirdly guilty and sorry for ending an inanimate object's life!
Anyway insurance don't want my broken TV, so now have to figure out what to do with it - any ideas? My initial thought was try to find a replacement panel and have a tinker trying to replace it (there is a guide online) but it seems impossible to find the screen for a Samsung KS7500 series - probably why the insurance didn't want to attempt a repair. Anyone know of sources of replacement LCD/LED panels?
Or is it just not worth it and I should chuck it on gumtree/FBMP as spares and repair - or take it to a recycling centre?

I took our old Samsung to the recycling centre. It didn't need a new screen, but the power supply unit (probably) needed to be replaced. Like you, I had the idea of trying to fix it, but when I looked at the cost of parts, it would have been cheaper to buy a used TV than the parts, so I decided not to bother.
A classic case of a throwaway product, sadly - good luck if you do find anything!
Edited to add: I looked for parts on eBay, can't really suggest anything more focussed than that!

turn the panel into a natural looking light source.
There are a handful of youtube videos out there showing how you do this. basically involves removing the LCD layer (thats almost always broken). leaving just the white backlite along with various filter sheets ontop. its the filter sheets that make it look like a natural light source.
really cool idea if you want to add light to a room that's almost daylight-like

The cost for the manufacturer of holding and shipping panels in a TV market with ever-declining prices just makes repair uneconomically viable.
Have a look at stripping the TV for parts. Casework isn't worth anything, but the remote, the T-Con board, the power supply and maybe the motherboard have value. Have a look on Ebay for an idea of price ranges.
