Despite having gone through a lot of BMWs in the past, I have only ever owned one M car, an E24 M635csi highline which was brilliant but at the time, was ruinously expensive to keep in good order. The time is right to buy another 'M' to replace my Audi A5 coupe (current model). The shortlist is M4, F10 M5 or M6. Doing the maths, they are all likely going to cost pretty much the same to run / buy (PCP / HP) and affordable, as I am in a much better financial situation than when I had the E24.

The only thing that remains to be tested is whether they are comfortable to drive. The E24 seats were supremely comfortable but most non-M models I have test driven have quite uncomfortable seats (F10 535d, F30 335d and 4-series) - as someone who is, ahem, a bit well upholstered around the middle (OK fat kn@cker), the deep bolsters cause an issue and exacerbate a bad back from having a hollow back and over-curved upper spine. I see that the M cars I have shortlisted have different seats to the standard sports seats fitted to the cars I test drove so BMW M-owning PHers:

  1. (Long shot) how comfortable are M-sport seats compared to Audi or MB equivalents?
  2. Are the M seats more adjustable than the standard sports seats?
  3. If not, do the M5 or M6 come with comfort seats (I know the M4 doesn't).
Yes, I know the only way to tell is is to get in and drive it but these are cars that are usually a few miles away and I don;t want to have to traipse over half the country if a few pointers from PH members in the know could save me the journey.

Thanks in advance.

Will be interested in hearing some of the responses (especially about M6 as I'm in the market currently). The M5 comfort seats are best in class. So so so good. I'd personally not buy an M5 unless it had the comfort seats, so nothing to worry about there.

The M3/4 comes with the hard backed M seats, I found them very comfortable and similar to the sports seats in my old 997, I did 90,000 miles in less than 3 years often doing 400-500 miles in a day and they were fine and supportive. My M5 had the M multifunction seat option (M version of the comfort seats) and they were incredible, deeply bolstered and endlessly adjustable and far better than the standard comfort seats I had in my 7 series which you tend to sit on rather than in with the M versions.

Can't comment on the M6 seats which I know are different to the M5 versions.

Thanks Wills2 - I found the seats in the 987 / 997 to be fairly comfortable so worth a punt.

The comp seats in the F8x have lots of adjustment. I used to have two settings set and I could flick between them on long journeys to ensure I wasn't sat in the same position for hours on end.
