Last year, I picked up a cheap RC truck for the kids (circa £30). They love it but it’s cheap tat really and the combination of non-proportional controls, no differential and low grip tyres means its actually quite hard to drive.

Ideally I want to get them something they can drive in the garden, nothing too fast (A mate let me have a go with his brushless FTX carnage; Way too fast) and something that has actually got grip and proportional controls.

I saw the FTX outback 2, which could work, but with oil filled dampers etc it’s probably a touch overkill given it will be used by the kids.

Any suggestions. Needs to have enough power/size to manage going outside on the grass.

For young kids a rock crawler might be more fun

My 6 year old loves playing with a Tamiya Hornet, it’s fast enough for him to have fun but not too fast that he can’t control it.

He also enjoyed the build and took a real interest with how it works.

I bought an FTX Vantage brushless recently and my 7 year old is fairly competent with it. My 3 year old needs a bit of help.

It’s a very robust car and pretty quick out the box. I’m currently looking for some quicker discharge batteries hehe

I just bought a job lot of FTX Tracers on Ebay, two truggies and a truck for just over £100. Seems great value, and the kids can go wild with them in the garden. Of course I spoiled the bargain hunting savings by immediately spaffing another £20 on oil filled shocks so I can upgrade one of them, but that's just the way it goes!

I've been wondering the same thing here. 5 and 3 year old.

We got our four year old an ftx tracer for Xmas

It's taken some really hard hits... Head on into kerbs and the like and seems all good still.

Far to fast at max speed but turn it down and all good for the little ones.

Great fun.

Another vote here for the FTX Tracers.

I got my 4 & 6 year olds one each a couple of months ago & they have been great fun and nothing has broken yet.

There is a dial on the hand controller where you can turn the power up or down, so perfect for little ones. This means they can use them in the garden with the power turned down & turn it up a bit when we head over to the park.

I was worried that because they were only 1/16 that they would be useless on grass, but we got the monster truck version and they work great.

I honestly though that something would have been broken in one of the many crashes, but still going strong.

Thanks, the FTX Tracers look a good shout and pretty cheap as well.
