2018 Jaguar XF 2.0 25t 250 Petrol v 2009 XF 2.7D
Discussion
I've owned my 2009 XF 2.7D Premium Luxury since nearly new and have enjoyed totally trouble free motoring. However, I'm aware the car is getting on now, so I'm considering it changing it, either for a 2014 / 2015 last of the old shape XF 3.0D 240bhp / 275bhp S or a 2018 new shape XF 2.0 Petrol 25t 250 bhp.
I have no doubt that the 2014 / 2015 will be far superior to my old 2.7D but I'd be very interested to hear from anyone with experience of the petrol new shape XF. I don't fancy a diesel 180 bhp new shape XF but is the petrol version likely to be smoother and more reliable?
I read in Autocar a couple of years ago that that the new shape XF is the lowest ranked car of its class in reliability surveys and that were many recalls including oil leaks, engine cut outs, cracked sills etc.
Is the 2018 XF petrol a reliable car and is there anything I should check for? I'm planning to keep it for a long time so will be running it many years after any extended warranties are available.
I was initially concerned about the smoothness of the 4 cylinder petrol engine too - is it as smooth as the 6 cylinder 2.7?
In a nutshell, do XF owners think I should go for a last of the line 3.0 or a new shape 2.0 petrol?
Thanks in advance

I had an XF 25t for 2 years. I liked the drive, the engine was responsive and willing if not a bit thrashy. What would out me off having another personally is I found the interior to be miles behind the competition in terms of quality, finish and tech. Mine was completely reliable in the time I had it but it was new and only 2 years old by the time it went....
I do a fair amount of work for a local Jaguar specialist so have poked around and driven loads of both in varying trims/engines as well as owning a 3.0d 2013 a couple of years ago.
I'd definitely go for a last of line old shape S in Portfolio spec.
They've gone backwards with the interior on the new shape (imo)...inferior material quality and a slapdash arrangement to switch placement.
The exterior looks a bit generic and 'meh' too. In a class of excellent cars from other brands you can see why Jaguar didn't sell many when compared to the opposition.
Happy shopping!
Cheers,
Chris

Or if you want to go petrol then a last of the line V6 S is the pick:

I drive occasionally my Dad’s last of the line XF 3.0 XF and I’m always impressed. When I chose my current car 2019 BMW 530d M Sport I also drove the same year 3.0 Diesel S with 300 BHP. Buy one and you’ll be impressed they really are sharp.
I would avoid the 2 tone interiors and get one with the electronic dashboard.
