I have just got a new job which for the first time in 20 years does not come with a company car. As I work in the motor industry I have been on the gravy train of new cars every 4 months fully expensed, but now I have to dig deep.

I'm looking forward to it! The chance to drive what I want.

So for a budget of £20k max what cars should I be putting on to my shopping list - the only requirements are that I like hot hatches or performance variants, I don't want a BMW or Audi as I used to work for both manufacturers and have had my fill of those cars so really I am looking for interesting perhaps 'performance car of the year' type vehicle.

To get started my short list includes

Hyundai I30N
VW Up GTI
Megane 265

Porsche 99? cab

Boxster/Cayman but which one?

what else? The plan is to buy a run a few of these for 6 months each over the next couple of years.

over to you.

I know you said no BMWs but one car I recently stepped away from the chance of owning is the B58/LCI M140i. It drove great but I was way too indecisive at the time to commit.

I was coming from a 2.0T scirocco at the time and RWD/3.0 combo in a car that size was definitely fun but I could also see myself using it as a daily.

£15k on something that's fun, Elise, VX220, Caterham.

What's left over on something else.

Lancia Thema 8.32. Ferrari sourced engine and all that. They can be rusty, and the electrics are ste, but great cars if you get a good one.

It’s in budget as well.

Maybe not a performance car but it does have a 6L 12 cylinder. It'd be an amazing thing to smoke around in for a short period.

I’ll do the norm and suggest my car , a real gem of a car ,supercharged engine is a delight , rare but your get one easy under 20k probably nearer 17-18k , some nice trick bits on it lovely seats, LSD , forged wheels quick enough for fun 0-60 in 6 and 145mph not to shabby and very lightweight at 1135kg , through the twisty bits it’s pretty quick . I know everyone is raving about the new GR Yaris but that’s double the price right now .

Given the current discussion around the Alfa Guilia, a Veloce with near 300bhp and rear wheel drive would definitely not be a an Audi/BMW.

No I don't own one, I've got a Volvo estate :-)

Its a Yaris GRMN , it’s a rare beast only 88 registered in the uk according to how many left . I’ve had mine nearly 2 years and I’ve not seen another on the road . It reminds me of my old Clio 182 but a better engine. And it’s quicker , lotus used this engine in the Elise .

A 6.2 C63 AMG. A gentlemans hot rod. Plus that V8.
A 1x2 Clio as a laugh.

A proper barge. That Bentley is ruinous but wonderful.

TVR Chimaera . Run it this summer through to late autumn. You won't loose much if anything. Tough cars these days and relatively cheap to run if you're doing modest mileage.
Smile per mile better than most things out there.

Do it!

As someone with limited car ownership

Having owned
Fiesta ST150
Fiesta ST Mk7
GR Yaris

And looking at the way the industry is going, I would say focus on light NA fun cars. And just have fun

GT86? MX5 even now I still think can you get more fun?

PS never owned them
