Nobody can tell you if a car is going to be reliable or not.
People tend to buy based on previous experiences. Many will say German cars are unreliable but I have owned numerous BMW's over the years and have found them no more or less reliable than other brands.
There are a few options for £10k, most estate cars would accommodate a couple of dogs but personally I would be looking at something like a Skoda Superb or Octavia as you seem to get a lot of car for less money than the similar Audi/VW/BMW type estate cars.

2013 V70 with 5-pot and manual here.
I bought it at 5 years/70k. It is now on 8 years/130k.
It has cost typical servicing only, plus one broken spring and I just had a new alternator today. It has one iffy door central locking (Ford part...) that doesn't always close. I had turbo and EGR cleaned up when I bought it as it had a slight hesitation when you floored it. I am expecting the bushings to need doing soon with such high miles.
Other than that it is comfy, mine is lower power and last of the 5-pot (D3/163bhp) so managed £20 a year tax and @45mpg around the doors, 50+mpg on a run. SE with upgraded stereo and winter pack - heated oh so comfy seats, beautifully clear sounding stereo, the most logical dash of any car (bar the hand brake switch location and the cup-holders on a manual), amazing headlights etc etc.
It carries canoes, bikes and family around the Highlands with aplomb.
Just back from a service today and it is back to a 5-pot purr up the motorway home.
Some of the latest (2013 on) 4-pot Volvo engines are a little more fussy apparently; the 2.0D Citroen/Ford unit well known. The last of the 5's (D3, D4, D5 but check the exact engine) are good, solid and well understood to service and fix. Brakes and suspension are mainly looted from Ford parts bin so cheap. D5's with Auto or even CrossCountry are fabulous - but £300+ tax and 35mpg (a friend has one...) and the T5's an absolute hoot in a straight line. R Line's look good, have even better seats, but tend to come with rubber band tyres under the stiffened suspension, which when I test drove didn't play nicely with a car for cruising around.

These look good value even the E250CDI. Nice big boot.

Someone's taken a bath on that Mazda, though perhaps it was well discounted.
I thought being several years younger than similar prices car was Vauxhall's party piece

Can't agree more - I run a 2008 D5 auto and it's a wonderful place to be and quick to boot. 34mpg pretty standard on my B road commute but 40 would be managable on longer runs. Have the 185 version btu I can't imagine the 163 being an issue, although I would want auto all the way as it's a great wafter. I bought it at 5 years/70k. It is now on 8 years/130k.

I keep thinking about changing it but it doesn't owe me anything and without financing upto my eyeballs it's about the best think i'll get for comfort and load carrying capacity.
These are my picks.
