Hello Phers

I’ve just bought a new car. It’s a 5008 so nothing exciting, but I’m just wondering what people do (if anything) to look after the interior (2 young children) and exterior from day 1.

The car is unregistered and will be delivered (not driven) from about 90 miles away.

The Peugeot dealer has set out the usual options: supaguard paint and upholstery protection £199; cosmetic repairs for 3 years £329; service plan; and GAP £349 for 3 years.

Re GAP: it’s a cash purchase, but from my (limited) understanding, RTI could be worthwhile if taken with ALA and the PH 12 per cent discount, which comes in a fair chunk cheaper and should avoid any arguments with my insurer should the need arise.

Cosmetic repair I shall leave.

Paint and upholstery...it’s something I’d like done. However, I can probably buy my own kit for about 10 per cent of the quoted price. But I’d rather pay someone to do it for me, but the car isn’t anything exotic so not looking at an expensive detailing job that I might want if I was buying something much more exciting.

Ideally, I’d have it done before delivery. But not sure what/how as what is offered by the dealer is unlikely to be worthwhile.

For a car like this and without the time/ inclination to do it myself, is there a relatively cost effective alternative that is actually worth it?

Thank you for reading smile

Cheapest option do it yourself.
Alternative option, use a local mobile valeter and detailer. They will probably be cheaper than the dealer but will definitely do a far better job and likely use better products. (This is what i've done with my last few cars)

Alternatively just pay the dealer. £199 is actually cheaper than a lot of dealers i've seen tbh. My concern with dealers is a) do they actually do it! or b) how well is it applied and what products are they using etc.

I had my quite modest Mini ceramic coated and I think it was well worth it. It sits outside all the time under trees and it seems a lot easier to clean off all the pollen and poo etc.

I have leather upholstery so I also bought some inexpensive seat protectors from Amazon to go underneath the kids’ car seats. They sit flatly underneath and catch all the dusty crap that tends to gather beneath. You can also get similar things for the backs of the front seats where, as you’ll know, small feet make a big mess.

Whatever you do don't pay the dealer for anything other the car itself. Wheel cover, GAP and paint treatments can all be purchased for either a lot less or you will get a much better product (or even both).

Find a local detailing firm to prep and seal the paint and treat the interior. I did the same about six years ago only Golf GTD and the detailer made a fab job of it. Maintenance washes/wheel cleaning etc were so much easier and it was money well spent.

Rear seat cover, sits under the child seat so doesn't make the car any less comfortable for them.

In my experience, there is only so much you can do if the kids are younger.

I wouldn't be paying the dealer to do anything either, you can get things like GAP insurance and paint coatings and the like for much cheaper elsewhere.

The best thing you can do is try to educate the kids to be careful and respect the car but accidents are going to happen, things are going to get spilled etc.

I would not bother with the dealer options. Either contact some good local detailers, or go DIY. I did our new car with 50 miles on it, used carbon collective platinum collection, glass, wheels, plastic, and bodywork, a year and half on it still cleans great although the glass needs redoing as this wears of pretty quick. Interior, I sprayed all the fabric with their repel, again cleans easy and no marks or stains. £130 and 6 hours ish.

Many thanks all, most appreciated smile

The Peugeot dealer have been a pleasure to deal with. They haven’t pushed any of the products at all and just seem decent all round.

Though I’ve made enquiries today and found someone who sounds like they’ll do a great job. Budget will be increased but I may go for it and have asked the dealer to not valet it.

Thank you all beer
