Evening all,

I think I already know the answer but thought I'd run it past you folk on the off chance I could possibly do something.....
Back in November of last year I bought an 1998 Elgrand E50 from a chap off Facebook. Came across as a very decent bloke chatting prior to meeting and in person but turns out that he's done one over on me. Test driving it all seemed spot on and have intermittently driven it since purchasing one because of the lack of being able to drive due to covid and because I've been out of action for 3 months as a result of breaking my elbow during a run.
Long story short it started stalling a couple of weeks ago and continued to do so every time we took it out, anyway took it to specialist garage for Japanese vehicles and they've since discovered that the engine maintenance light has been removed and there has been an issue with the engine for some time. They are still trying to work out the issue with it and are taking it to Nissan for diagnostics on Monday when hopefully all will revealed.
So basically he's sold me a car that was crocked and covered it up by removing the bulb.
I appreciate that these are the risks with buying privately and I also understand that I should've noticed that the light wasn't coming on when turning on the ignition. I have yet to contact the bloke on Facebook for all its worth but my question is, is there anything I can do other than message him to give him a piece of my mind? I haven't got a leg to stand on have I? Proving it that he removed it is the sticking point eh?
Thanks in advance.....

The sticking point is buying a 23 year old banger off Facebook. Move on.

You’re correct - private sale and there’s nothing you can do, certainly not six months after you bought it.

Agree with the above, but removing the "check engine" bulb is a bit unsporting.

Removing engine management lights is not uncommon on Jap imports but it's a 23 year old car, why on earth would it be taken to Nissan? The cost of diagnostics will probably be a large percentage of the cost of the car

There's no telling he was the one who had the light turned off. A car of that age will have had a lot of hands on it over the years. Has it got a sports exhuast on it? That could be a non-serious reason to have the light turned out, I know there's an endless amount of bits available for Elgrands

Have you joined the Elgrand OC forum? You’ll get plenty of assistance on there. I’m awaiting my E51 arriving next month.

Running old jap imports is a risk.

I'm an ex E51 (2004) owner. Got 2 happy years out of it until it developed a fault nobody could fix without spending thousands on it.

One to chalk up to experience I suspect. The risk of a private sale and all that.

Also, as someone pointed out a few posts up, the engine management light may well have been disconnected by another owner/trader than the guy you bought it from.

Fingers crossed it turns out to be something trivial and easily/cheaply fixed!

I agree that you may have to take this one on the chin.

Also find out what's wrong first before contacting the seller.

OP not allowed to have more than one car?

What is it about people interrogating peoples post history on here - its surely not the kind of post that would be made up is it? (which is, assume the motivation for checking post history)

No way would I take an Elgrand to a Nissan dealer in the UK and I worked for one for 25 years.

Never sold in the UK, few Nissan techs will ever have worked on one and the dealer won`t have any diagnostic gear or manuals for them.

There will be no listing for them in anything the service advisors have access to and most will say "Elgrand? whats one of those then?". With no book times for anything, pricing will be made up on the hoof and the parts guys won`t have a clue.
