Trying to decide between one of two cars for my partner and we still can't come to a decision. Either:

2016 V40 D4 R Design Pro Auto
Or
2016 Merc A220 CDi AMG Sport Auto

Does anyone have any good/bad experience of either?

Cheers!

We have a manual 2014 v40 d4 r design....love it, only issue we have had over the 4 years we have had it has been a rear door lock needed replacing (a fairly common issue on our year apparently)
Apart from that it has been faultless, the media system isnt the easiest to understand, but the stereo sounds great, and the seats are amazingly comfortable. Our car is of the zero tax age, which is always a nice bonus, not sure what the auto on these is like, but our manual is good, loads of power.
We did look at a merc at the same time, but prefered the handling and power of the volvo.

I’ve driven the Volvo, these are nice cars and it’ll be rare with that engine, most are D2s or T2s. I disagree with the post that said the sound system is hard to operate, it’s very easy in my view and all controllable with the little wheel on the steering wheel - not many people seem to know that.

I haven’t driven the Mercedes but they do look smart. Just got to try both, see what deals you can do and see what works for you.

I never said the sound system is hard to operate, but overall it isnt as simple or intuitive as that in a bmw for example.
A couple of our friends have both had the mercedes A220, and a number of niggly faults have been noted by both of them, nothing major, but enough to question the additional cost of the merc vs the volvo.

I would say definitely the Volvo. The A220CDI comes exclusively with a dual-clutch auto which is horrible.

220 diesel is a rougher unit than Volvos VEA D4

Thanks for your replies! Looks like the Volvo is the best bet so far. We've organised to view one tomorrow which is a D4 R Design Pro with lots of factory options.

Does anyone know what the cambelt interval is on those?

For our 2014 d4 the cambelt interval is 90k or 10yrs.

It''s a tough one booth are good picks but I'd say the R Design Pro edges the Sport when it comes to the interior, the ride on the A Class is better as is the NVH both engines are good, I'd say test drive them & I think that'll give you the answers you need.

Out of the two I'd buy the A220's cousin which is the Infiniti Q30 Sport it's the same car as the A220 but with same but nicer
interior than the V40 & AMG Line spec A220.

Q30 Sport

Finally I'd also say you should consider the DS5 in Prestige spec, they're very good cars on par with the V40 but with a slightly nicer interior:

So I'd say get the Q30 if you decide the A Class is for you & it would be the DS5/V40.

We have a V40 D4 R Design Pro auto and it has been a great car. A fantastic all-rounder with plenty of poke in the real world along with being really economical.

I think the cam belt interval is 90k miles (but don’t quote me).

@Mark - thats the colour we ideally want! The red looks superb! However there doesn't seem to be any for sale in that colour with the spec im after which is a shame. We're going to view a bursting blue one tomorrow which is our second favourite colour.

Cambelt at 90k, whoop! Thats ages away thankfully.

@ZXR - I did consider the Q30 as I know its an A class in disguise with a better spec too, however the Mrs is a major badge snob, and sadly, yes she wears the trousers (I'm batting way above my league btw).

You’re very welcome. Bursting Blue is also lovely and that was our other choice! The panoramic roof is a nice touch if you can find one with it. Good luck and I hope you find a nice one.

Agreed. The one we are viewing has:

Pan roof
Blind spot monitoring
Adaptive cruise
Elecrric memory drivers seat and electric pass seat
Reverse camera
Front and rear sensors and park assist
Harmon Kardon audio

Plus the usual r design pro bits and pieces. Hasn't even been advertised yet, so we're seeing it before it goes live which is a Brucy bonus. Fingers crossed!

Fair enough then I'd say go for the Volvo.

Of these 2 definitely the V40.
Had a Merc A200d sport for a while as a company car. Rock hard ride, stingy standard equipment, gruff engine,it was ok but nothing more.
Mk7 Golf GTD that replaced it was infinitely better as is the Mini Clubman I have now.
