Does anyone have any contacts in Libya?

Right guys, this is a bit of a long shot...

The wife and I are off to Libya in October on the way to Cape Town.:thumbup: (How exciting, eh?)

In order to get a visa we either need to go with an organised tour or get an invitation from a Libyan national living in Libya.

We're not keen on getting a tour as we want to do our own thing, so we're looking for a Libyan national to send our details to the immigration authorities in Tripoli. From there the authorities will organise the visa.

Obviously we'll pay any expenses, and the person who "invites" us doesn't bear any responsibility for us when we're over there.

Not that I have been to Libya, but in other countries (e.g Russia) invites from personal contacts are notoriously harder to get and involve quite a lot of effort for the person inviting you (its a nightmare in Russia, lots of queuing interviews).

Would have though that somewhere like Libya it was best to be part of a tour anyway.

I will need to check this tomorrow but I think some hotels can "invite" guests. I stayed at the Corinthia and although I was invited by our office I met a couple of English sales guys there who had a hotel invite.
Not sure if it is an official method or a understanding that may require a little cash assistance.
Not a terrible hotel in a silly glitzy way, there are some amazing ruins within easy car reach, Sabratha is good but if you only have time for one go east to Leptis Magna, the guides claim they are the best Roman ruins in the world and that could well be true.
You will need guides and drivers to move about unless you speak good Arabic, but it is pretty cheap we got a guy with good English and car for 2 days for under 100 bucks.

You should still be ok, I don't think anyone has mentioned a muslim uprising yet.

We've heard this and are looking into it, but I thought I'd try PH on the off chance.

Tripoli, on the beach pretty close to the CBD it's pretty good and very upmarket for Libya. Now that they are allowing chain hotels in the standards are really going up, beware some of the cheaper old govt hotels are truly appalling in a eastern bloc kinda way.
