Do you know why the breather pipe goes into the air filter and will a crankcase breather do the same thing?
short answer no ,but i am sure other people will know pretty sure pete (greenv8s) will know

The breather pipes are to used to scavenge unburnt mixture that has blown by the pistons, and oil vapour, from the crank case. This is then fed to the inlet manifold or air filter so the gasses are then burnt by the engine, so reducing emissions.

Pressure builds up in the engine crankcase due to vapour from the hot engine oil and also from exhaust gases that escape past the piston rings (this will be more apparent in a high mileage engine where the piston rings are starting to wear). A crankcase breather system is used to release this pressure. To avoid the polluting effects of allowing the oil vapour to escape directly into the atmosphere, the breather feeds the crankcase gases into the engine where they are burnt and so converted to less harmful compounds.

Great news, I finally got the courage to take the S to a local specialist and there is no damage to the engine!
The cornering forces involved at Oulton Park meant that oil was entering the breather pipe just below the oil filler cap and running down into the air filter.
There are things that could be done to improve this including baffles in the sump and a dry sump configuration but this is all money that could be spent on a Cosworth implant!

I once had a 1968 VW that used to produce nearly as much gas and oil from the breather as from the exhaust
But, as the others have said it is really only there for emissions, so you could use a catchment tank and a condensor if you wish AFAIK.
Be aware this this is not true of all cars, my old golf needed to run a closed system to ensure the correct fuel mixture.
Another common reason for breathers exiting into the induction system may be that the induction vacuum also leads to good scavenging of gasses and volitiles from the engine / oil.
