What to do after undercarriage of car hit speedbump
Discussion
Hey guys,
So my older brother was driving his BMW E92 M3 when he heard this piece of metal underneath the car scraping on the motorway, which he then had to tear off after. He suspects it came loose after going a little fast over a speedbump.
Just wondering should he get it looked at or not? Will it need replacing?
Please let us know - it would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

It will either be a bit of heat shield/ part protector or an areo device to make the underside airflow smoother creating downforce.
As long as he is not going to drive like a hooligan and smash over more speed bumps it will be fine until he next needs to go to a garage. Just get the part swapped over at its next service or MOT whilst its up on the ramp.
It can also be done at home if you have a couple of axle stands. It will literally only be held on with a few bolts

There's several pages of under trays and heat shields for these, where/what exactly are we looking at?

Thanks a lot. I have passed this message to him. Please note he sent me a picture of the part of the plastic that came off if that helps (see link below). Shall we assume it's the heat shield/protector?As long as he is not going to drive like a hooligan and smash over more speed bumps it will be fine until he next needs to go to a garage. Thanks for this . Brother just sent me another picture of the part of plastic (not whole piece) in the link below. He said it came from the front of car. Please let me know if you have any idea!https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=WD92...

Yeah it's part of number 20 in this diagram: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=WD92...https://ibb.co/89H411q
https://ibb.co/XCKnWNs
Part number 51757899820, if you put that into Google images you'll see the bit that's broken off is just aft of the oil cooler opening.
Or see the part detail photos here: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-bmw-parts/bell...
£149.78 from shop.bmw.co.uk
Bear in mind other parts or the mounting points could be cracked/damaged so IMO might as well check it out properly before ordering parts.
