Family car - £1k deposit and max £350 per month

What would you suggest?

I have a budget of £350 per month and a deposit of£1k. No real preference over PCP, lease or HP.

Needs to accommodate 2 kids, so space and boot is important.

Just do what most families do and get a Nissan Juke then regret it as it’s the most boring car on earth

On a serious note, are you fussed about MPG? How many miles are you doing per year?

VED cost a concern?

Does that budget include running costs, ie servicing, insurance , fuel etc ?

£350 a month will get you about a £20k loan over 5 years.
That should get you into something with a bit of fun.
I would be looking at a 1 or 2 year old car that was less than 40k new

Leasing deals don't seem quite a good these days as they once were... but they are worth looking at if you want something new. You can quite easily get family cars for 2 years, 20k miles for around £6.5k total.

Obviously £6.5k is a lot of money, but if you bought a car for £20k and drive it for 2 years and 20k miles, I bet you'd struggle to guarantee you could sell it for £13.5k. And that's before you factor in any interest on a loan, plus road tax which you don't pay on a lease.

All the car anyone ever needs. Brand new, plenty of kit, plenty of space. Almost £200/month under your budget with which you can have a bit of family fun and not once think to yourself "I wish we were paying more".

There are countless cars to lease at £200/month with a £1,500 to £2,000 deposit, and there is a strong argument for always leasing.

That seems quite underpowered for that size of car. Especially with its petrol engine.

Its a 1 litre engine with 110bhp in a skoda octavia. Its a very large car that once 4 up is going to struggle. Its an ok car. Its not going to be a fun drive.

If you’re willing to spend 350 a month then you must have a few more things on your wish list. What else is important other than space for 2 kids?

If it’s just any family car with no particular preference then you could get something for a lot less money. If leasing just buy whatever is on special offer. Skoda Scala is currently whatcar’s best family car.

Boot isn’t the biggest but we are in a brand new mini clubman Cooper s for less than your budget

I think Brighton Audi usually have some interesting PCPs, IIRC they had a Q2 for £320 a month with a £320 deposit or a Q3 for £399 with a £399 deposit...

I'd suggest taking a look at a personal loan it opens you up some great used options, as others have said you need to add a bit more to your requirements, how many miles do you do? Hatchback/Saloon/Estate/SUV?
