2017 T32 Nissan X-Trail Stop/Start System Fault

My 2017 T32 X-Trail has started coming up with the EML and "Stop/Start System Fault" warning on the dash. I have looked online and whilst there are many threads on the topic, there doesn't appear to be an answer. Some say it could be the battery, but the battery is reading 12-12.5V (with a multimeter and tested in-situ), so I don't think it is that. I have also cleaned the terminals/contacts, but no change to the original issue.

I have check the fault codes with my OBD2 reader and I get P0037 (Heater Control Circuit Low) and P0138 (02 Sensor Circuit High Voltage). This could imply battery, but maybe there is a faulty relay somewhere in the circuit?

Has anyone else had this issue with X-Trail? Any ideas greatly welcomed!

If the car has been bought from a main dealer and has a full service history take it to your local dealer and they'll fix a large part of it under goodwill.
I am assuming its the 1.6D ( I have one) it sounds like a DPF fault which will require a regeneration possibly a replacement, this usually would include an oil change. Its a fairly common fault, and like I say if you are a Nissan customer you'll get some support. ( oh your car needs less than 80k miles).

It could be a battery fault, if you do lots of short driving cycles and never get the car fully charged then the stop start, stops working. It is trigged of a switch on the clutch which if you don't fully depress once every 25 gear changes will stop working.

Thanks for the reply. The car is a 1.6 Petrol, so not DPF related.

It is still under warranty from the main dealer, I just wanted to see if it was fixable before going there, as it’s not local and I’m expecting them to sell me an expensive battery that I may not need.

It’s got to be battery related then. If you have full service history than ask for some goodwill. I got a new battery foc last year on my 15 plate t32

If it’s still under warranty and dealer services you may have manufacturers breakdown cover.
Have a check and see if you have and get breakdown out.
They can change Nissan batteries at roadside under warranty.
Saves a trip to the dealers.
Will be sorted faster and less messing about for you

Also maybe call out the rac, you have cover if your serviced it at a main dealer look in your service book. They may diagnose and replace a battery on site

I think it does have RAC breakdown cover, so that could be an option

It’s also started to randomly activate the anti-collision system. Maybe it is a battery/voltage issue..... I see you need to get a new battery coded to the car! Stupid modern technology

Definitely the battery.
It will be the fiamm battery that’s fitted at a guess.
Get the rac out and they’ll do a battery test and when it fails fit you a new battery under warranty without even having to leave home.

I have just had a look through the paperwork and the dealer RAC ran out earlier this year.

The battery is a Panasonic Stop/Start one.

when did you last get it serviced at a main dealer. If you don't have a service plan and pad cash then the RAC cover is automatically renewed. If they haven't done that you can go to your dealer and tell them to sort it. But only if you have had a service in the last 12 months. But in any case you'll probably get this done under goodwill. Who is your local dealer BTW?

It’s the one in Winchester. They are a main dealer (Martin’s maybe?).

We do have a service plan, which runs to the end of this year. The car was last serviced in Nov-20 at the main dealer.

I’ll give them a call next week and book it in. I’ll push to get it changed under goodwill, but the battery is specially listed as not covered under the warranty agreement.

Quick update - I went to Nissan today and it is the rear 02 sensor that is causing the issue (they believe). It’s being replaced under warranty, so hopefully that resolves the issue.

Did replacing the oxygen sensor fix this issue? I’ve recently had the engine management light come on and also the stop/start system failure which felt like two separate issues as they happened. Garage ran a diagnostic check on it and it came back with the oxygen sensor. They tried to clean up the connections initially to see if that resolved it but unfortunately it has come back. Seems quite pricey for a sensor at £155 so wanted to make sure this is likely to resolve it.
