Porsche Cayman base model - modified
Discussion
Hi all
So I collected my modified 718 Cayman today from Regal Autosport in Southampton. This time they fitted my 3rd radiator and water/methanol kit to help keep temps down when it’s working hard (track days etc).
As a bonus, the cooler intake temps took power up from 385bhp to 400bhp and torque from 350 lb/ft to 378 lb/ft.
The car feels amazing and water / oil temps are noticeably lower. I am very pleased and can’t wait to try the car out at the next track day at Castle Combe.
I cannot recommend Regal enough so if you are considering tuning your car, improving suspension, cooling or brakes -and you are based in the south of England - give them a ring.
full spec now includes:
400bhp 378lb/ft base Cayman 718 2.0 litre
HJS 200cell race cat, Regal Autosport stage 2 tuning
Ohlins road and track suspension with GT4 setup
Brembo large disks, ds2500 pads, braided hoses, race fluid
3rd front radiator from GTS models
Snows water/methanol injection kit
Porsche Carrera 20”wheels MPS4s tyres
Race dynamics 18” track wheels Kumho V700 track tyres
I’ve probably forgotten a few things lol
The way I see it is I have more than GT4 performance for 1/2 the money. Of course I’d love a GT4 but honestly can’t afford one and prefer my cars built not bought ha
Any questions happy to answer.
Cheers.

What an interesting way to go about it, well done to you.
Different proposition with a turbo rather than n/a, are you are the sensible limit of power for the engine now? If you decided to upgrade, would you consider the 2.5 or go to a GT4? I imagine the 2.5 has even more headroom, maybe to 450ish? Would start to get up there with the GT3s then.
Lovely.

Yes, we all do things differently. This was the best car in my budget and I love making little improvements along the way.
As for changing, I have no plans as I love it as it is. An S might be tuned upto 450 with all the supporting mods but I couldn’t warrant the extra spend over mine. If owners of the S model do it though, I’d be keen to hear how far it goes with the 2.5 litre and bigger turbo.

On top of the pride of the car, I guess I have spent about £5k to get it to where it is now.
This breaks down approximately like this :
£200 - 200 cell race cat which took us to 305bhp
£800 - tuning which took us to 385bhp and 350lb/ft
£2k - Ohlins road and track suspension - amazing
£1,500 - 3rd rad and water meth - 400bhp and 378lb/ft
£500 - new disks, ds2500 pads, braided lines and fluids
A few smaller bits and pieces like alcantara steering wheel and gear shifter, track wheels and tyres, regular servicing etc.
Hope that helps others - it would be great to have more tuned 718’s. There is lots of potential here.

(I think I am in the minority for thinking that the 718 sounds pretty good, reminds me of the Subarus of my youth).
Agreed. I think the 718 platform is often overlooked - particularly the smaller engines versions.
It has a fantastic chassis already but really comes alive with a few choice mods and the power seems “just right”. I really hope that more people get involved and enhance the 718 Cayman/Boxsters.
Regarding sound, I agree - it does sound pretty good. Not as good as the 6cylinder 987 which I had before but it’s a different sound and (once enhanced with the race cat and an extra 100+ bhp) it does have a character of its own.

I've been wondering for a while when I'd first see someone go down this route rather than a GT4 etc.
As you say there's the potential for some serious performance for much less than you would pay for a GTS or GT4. In fact, if outright power is the sole criteria it's probably the best. Obviously some folks prefer the N/A six and, of course, there is the loss of warranty or the ability to have an extended warranty, but thumbs up from me!

I'm surprised tuners haven't made more of this platform, very overlooked. I was expecting we'd be seeing loads of 500+ bhp cars around, when you look at the development many tuners have put into things like the Audi RS3, Nissan GTR, etc, it can't be down to cost of the car or the parts.
Is there a fundamental reason people aren't interested?

On a separate note, have you run ds2500 pads before?
I had got negative feedback from a few on here when I was looking at buying them. Went for DS1.11s instead and they squeal like stuck pigs in normal driving!
Hi
Yes, on the tuning front I’m also surprised that there hasn’t been more done. Eventually I would like to get to 500bhp but a fully built engine and hybrid turbo is not cheap! I wonder if Porsches just aren’t seen as a”tuner” car - maybe they are expected to be perfect already?
On the brakes front - ds2500 - I’ve used them before and I find them fine for road and occasional track. It’s a decent compromise. I’d prefer a harder pad on track but then (as you say) they squeal on road. I suppose ideally I would change pads at the track and back again afterwards but it’s just a faff isn’t it?

Regrettably the vast majority of the demographic that buy 4 pot 718 Boxsters and Caymans are buying into the badge and the brand, which is shame, because the it's the same brilliant chassis irrespective of the powertrain.Yes, on the tuning front I’m also surprised that there hasn’t been more done. Most buyers will be more concerned about how the car looks parked on the drive or how they're perceived when out driving it, than whether it'll set a decent lap time. Add the fact that the vast majority will want to retain their "precious" warranty, and hence the reason most will remain stock.
