2019 Audi A5 Sportsback 40 tfsi S-tronic advice
Discussion
Still on the hunt for a new car, and took the above for a test drive and really liked it. Only thing putting me off is it being petrol as I do about 25k+ miles a year, so worried it could be a bit more expensive to run than diesel.
The one I have seen has done 25k already, and with my trade in I would get it for about £18k
Looking for some advice if this is a decent price, a ‘real’ fuel consumption I can expect for mostly motorway driving and any other general feedback would be appreciated.
I would be planning on keeping the car 5+ years so likely it will be hitting 150k when I look to replace.
Is there any common issues that I may need to consider with the engine/gearbox in this model? I’ve googled but nothing showing from what I can see

I’m considering an S6 Avant with the 4 litre V8 S-Tronic.
When you say hesitant in relation to the gearbox, do you mean slightly jerky at slow manoeuvring speeds, or something else?
I am used to DSG ‘boxes in Skoda and VW. This slow speed jerkiness is easy to drive around, and I would be happy so long as the gearshifts are smooth once the car is up to speed.

I had a 2016 ‘66 S3 with the S-tronic gearbox and I didn’t find it to be hesitant in the slightest, so you may be ok with the S6.
However I now have a Q5 with S-tronic , and I’m a lot more cautious when pulling out of junctions or onto roundabouts. In Auto or Comfort mode, from stationary there is up to 2 seconds of lag between putting your foot down and the car actually doing anything. Driving in Sport mode resolves this to some extent.

I'm not a big fan of diesels but, for doing 25k+ PA, it's a pretty significant saving. I've got the 2.0 EA888 engine in my Cupra and it's incredibly frugal for having 300 bhp, but i wouldn't wanna do that kinda mileage in it. You'll be filling up a fair bit. I'd probably go for a 6-cylinder diesel of some sort. Would probably be from BMW though.
Thanks for some feedback.
I must say I hadn’t seen anything about the hesitant gearbox, and when I took it a test drive I didn’t notice an issue.
The petrol is a stumbling block right enough, if I can get the price down then I could probably see past it!
On a side note, on a £21k car, any rough idea how much margin and room for haggling I can expect

If you are trading in, don’t worry too much about getting money off the Audi. Set up a cost to change you are happy with as dealers seem keener to offer a decent PX price than reduce the price on the car they are selling.
If they are keen to sell, they may up the PX price slightly to get your business.

Got a 2020 A4 with 40tfsi engine it's the 190bhp one they are 'mild hybrid' apparently, I get about 44- 46mpg on long steady run, even when I give some welly it rarely goes below mid 30's. My old A3 1.8t which I still have is far worse on petrol. As others said stronic can be slow even in sport, also if its the mild hybrid 40tfsi there was some recall work last year to replace alternator as fire hazard.

If you're paying mileage out of your own pocket a V6 diesel is the way to go and IMHO the ZF8 is the gearbox to have. The one I have seen has done 25k already, and with my trade in I would get it for about £18k

Modern <200bhp 2.0T engines should be doing 45-50mpg on a run unless you are heavy with your right foot.
Our Mini Clubman is 2.0T 189bhp and does 50mpg on a motorway all day long sitting at 70mph.
In contrast the Wife's 330D struggles to crack similar mpg on a run, I guess due to it being 3.0 rather than 2.0.
