Just trying to work out what is going on here. 2007 Ford Focus ST. Went in to have the driver side driveshaft changed.

When I got the car back I came out a couple of days later and noticed the brakes don't seem to be applying to half the brake disc on the outside face. Inside face is applying fine.

Anyone have any idea why this would happen? It wasn't doing it before it went in. I had the calliper off at the weekend and everything is greased like slidepins and everything torqued correctly, pads seated properly. Garage can have a look at it but trying to find out "why" its happened. Anyone seen this before?

Thanks

Just to add, when I had the calliper off I checked the pads for any sign of lubricant/grease from driveshaft being fitted and there is none that I could see

Find a quiet road and apply brakes forcefully a few times
Should clean that up and get them working right again

Hi,

No I tried that, 70mph on the motorway(at night) and nothing, did it a few times, and they are still the same. They do not pull left or right either, dead straight. I have never seen it before in 30 years of driving.

There is a slight misalignment of the disc from true.

When your drive shaft was changed the pads have been swapped, likely done to even up pad wear, but unfortunately it means that the uneven wear is now on the other side, which you can now see.

Either leave them & in a week or so (depending on use obviously) you will see the wear become more even.

Thanks for the reply, would the issue be fixed if I just replaced the pads? Would give me something to do over the weekend as well

Have ordered some new pads so hopefully that will resolve the issue as I don't use the car that much so not sure how long it would take to even up

Depends if pads are the issue.

Maybe they had the pads out and put them in the opposite way around from what they were.

Really it's a non issue.

I have an MOT coming up, not entirely sure they would pass it like that

If the braking is still good & not imbalanced it will be fine.

Looks like the pads are either not in perfectly flat or were previously not in perfectly flat, causing them to wear in a very slight wedge shape.

Make sure there’s nothing stopping the pads from seating against the outer side of the calliper when replacing the pads. If the current pads were fitted not perfectly flat, then the rotor might be worn unevenly, so you might find new pads doesn’t fix the problem. Providing the rotor still has plenty of life left in it then the new pads will wear together with the rotor and eventually clear off the stripe of rust.

Old pads off, give the calliper a good scrub with a wire brush, fit new pads - making sure they seat against the calliper properly.

The discs and pads were brand new and have done 500 miles or less.

This has only happened since the driveshaft was changed last week, the car has done 15 miles since then

My next guess is that the pads have been mixed, left to right, when reassembling from the drive shaft change.

I’ve had brand new rotors show very similar when wearing through the factory protective coating. The part of the rotor near the hub took a good hundred miles or so to wear through. I guess due to not being absolutely, perfectly, 100% flat and straight. The difference will be tiny, fractions of a millimetre.

I’d just keep an eye on it, providing your brakes are working okay

Did you not read the post where I told you what has caused the non-issue. wink

Took the pads out, they were in the correct place. Have changed them for new pads, problems gone.
