So I wear a basic cheap helmet (£25 I think), which I am sure in a crash would probably do something but not a whole lot!

Can anyone recommend a good helmet, that is around £60, mips looks like a good system is that worth having? Oh and its got to be black or white or a mix of both.

haha glad you see you think MIPS would be nice but it MUST be black or white. We cyclists are a slave to fashion arn't we.

I've looking for the same and have read lots of "the best helmets of ......" posts on various sites and I'm still non the wiser and think most are just personal preference wrt looks/vents etc.

I did decide on the Abus Viantor or MET Vinci but as of yet i've not bought one.

Got a MET Vinci, it's comfortable, seems pretty light and well made. Fits me better than the Giro it replaced but obviously that's completely personal. It's got MIPS inside. Not much else to say!

Last year I bought a Bontrager Solstice MIPS helmet for ~£50. I actually went to the shop for a different helmet but this fitted better.

In January I fell off when I hit black ice. The helmet performed well but was only good for the bin afterwards. Bontrager replaced for free under their crash protection scheme (valid for first year I believe) with a Starvos Wavecell (~£99) and I don’t find it fits as well.

If you can get yourself to a cycle shop to try on then it is recommended.

I think that cycling helmets are essentially designed to collapse in order to absorb the impact - so after any material impact (and definitely anything that leaves visible cracking etc) you should replace them.

There is an argument that a cheaper helmet can be safer as people are more willing to replace it after a knock.

This one (I think) saved my life last year after coming off at speed, did a fantastic job of collapsing rather than my skull:

I use these Wiggle DHB ones. found them a bit sleeker than the similar priced 'brand' alternatives, and suspect (from 1st purchase) they are actually made by Kask.

a couple of replacements from fall/my stupidity with a car, helmet seemed to do the job.

Thanks for all the info much appreciated! Especially those who have had an off and given their impressions of the helmet!

By the looks of it there are a few decent ones in the £60 mark.

Agreed, its widely acknowledged you replace a helmet if it has suffered from a big impact, thus protecting your skull

I'm looking at upgrading from one of these as the ventilation in the helmet is pretty poor (I do run hot though).

Do Specialised still give you 40% off a new helmet if you crash and wreck your existing specialised helmet? The echelon is very light and vented, the evade looks bad ass.
