Shoei Sizing - Large vs Medium
Discussion
I've lost over 10kg this year and appear to have gone from a 'Mr Moon Head' to, well there is no other way of putting this, 'A right sexy bas***d'
The trade off being is that I noticed my Shoei NXR is no longer a nice snug fit and does move around slightly on the bike.
Towards the back end of last year I did fit thicker cheekpads, up from 35mm to 39mm iirc?? I know they do a 43mm cheek pad, but I'm not sure that going up to them will ensure a nice fit.
So it sounds like a good excuse to buy a new helmet, but in a smaller shell size. SBS have some decent deals on X-Spirits and NXR's at the minute and my recently replaced photochromic visor would just drop straight on to the new lid.
Does anyone know exactly how much smaller a medium is compared to the large? Given that I'll be going from a large shell with 39mm pads to a medium with 35mm, with the option of fitting slimmer cheekpads if need be, it seems right to me?
As a side note. Which fitment camp do X-Lites fall in to? I'm definitely a Shoei, AGV, HJC shaped head and NOT an Arai, Bell shape.
Some of their X-803 Ultra Carbon RS offerings look canny.
Cheers.

I wore Arai RX7s for many years but the latest offering didn't fit me, I couldn't even get my head in the XL which was the size I was previously wearing (yes, I've got a huge head!) and I was told they stopped making XXL in the RX7 model so couldn't even try one. Some of their X-803 Ultra Carbon RS offerings look canny.
I tried on the X-lite 802RR ultracarbon (803 wasn't out then) and found it a better fit than the Arais I was used to (seems to have a little more forehead room) plus, it's much lighter, as well made as far as I can see and, maybe a little quieter? Also it was considerably cheaper and massively cheaper than a carbon Arai.
That said, I did have a Shoei many years ago and found it didn't really fit that well - it seemed OK wearing it when static but wind blast made it slip down at the front so I'm defintely an Arai (or X-lite) head.
So the X-lite gets a

The joy of SBS is their free returns, just order a few and try them all
I called to check as I didn't want to be unreasonable but they said this was the point of their policy and were perfectly happy for me to order 4+ to try on
Exactly this, I have 5 in the garage currently all due for return unfortunately I called to check as I didn't want to be unreasonable but they said this was the point of their policy and were perfectly happy for me to order 4+ to try on

SBS are brilliant.

Agreed, I've used SBS for years and bought a load of leathers in different sizes few years ago and sent back the ones I didnt want.

Its just with 'the currunt climate' I didn't really want to take the Michael and do the same thing with helmets, it wouldn't feel right to me, which is why I asked here first and if I can at least narrow it down from say 5 different helmets and sizes ro say 1 or 2 then I wouldn't mind so much.
My best fit is a large Shoei (X-Spirit 3) with entirely medium liners - the medium shell presses against my temple. I don't think the NXR has nearly as many liner pieces so this may be another option. Otherwise best to wait until its possible to get a new Shoei fully fitted as the replacement liners come free on a new helmet.
