I bought a car and the seller posted the paper slip of the V5C to the DVLA but this is still unprocessed so I have not received my new V5C yet. I have since subsequently sold the car in a private sale and told the new owner I will transfer it to him once my new V5C arrives but in the spirit of trying to speed things up, I was wondering what happens when you do the V5C online transfer after having sent the paper slip to the DVLA and they haven't processed it yet?

I taxed the car using the V5C/2 but I understand the reference for the original V5C is simply the reference of the V5C/2 without the first digit. So my main concern here is not getting my refund of the 12 months of tax that I paid on the day I purchased the car. What reference the new keeper normally receive to tax the car when the V5C is transferred online and the V5C/2 isn't provided? If it is the same as the V5C/2 provided then I think I should be able to receive the refund (instead of the original owner) once I transfer to the new owner.

I am thinking that the process can be sped up if I do the V5C transfer online to myself (from the original keeper), the new V5C should then arrive within the week (rather than 6-8 weeks from the postal transfer), I get refunded for the tax remaining that I have paid for already, new keeper/owner gets his new V5C much earlier and everyone is happy.

The new owner will need to complete a V62 and give the DVLA £25 to process it

Can't the seller just do it online?
