Range Rover L322 vs Discovery 4
Discussion
Morning All,
I’m looking to sell my car in the next few months or so and I’ve currently whittled the shortlist down to the above (the L322 would likely be the 3.6 TDV8 version).
I’d be looking to spend £10,000 on one of the above, but I reckon I could stretch to £12,000 if needed.
I’m torn between them, and I was wondering if you had any advice, or anyone has owned both at some stage and could give a comparison? What are they like to own? What are they like to drive? Obviously I’d ultimately need to drive one of each (which I can’t at the moment) but PH is usually a good bet for information, especially from people who’ve actually owned either of them, rather than a buyer’s guide written by someone who saw one once.
I’m thinking of moving away from my usual fair of 4 door saloons because I now have to use my car for work and the roads I have to drive down are nearly killing my dear old E39 530, so I was after something a bit tougher. Plus, and although I will actively not become a Walt, I’d quite like to try some off road driving!
I’m leaning towards the Range Rover, but my wife really likes the Disco! To be honest I’m sure I’d be perfectly happy with either, but just not sure which!

The Range Rover is a more luxurious drive, the Disco is more commodious in the rear but feels a little less plush.
I’d be using it for everything really - work use (travelling to and from sites which can be nestled down some pretty terrible roads), personal use I.e. hosing it down and going out to dinner, that sort of thing. Basically want something that’s reasonably tough but still looks modern and smart enough when cleaned up.

The L322 is cool. They are a great car (I had two) and are a really nice place to be. The boot space is adequate, but the car is all about the comfort of the driver and 3 passengers. Properly maintained, they are glorious. But don't expect running one to be inexpensive.Dare I say it, the L322 is looking a bit dated now and they handle like a poorly laden rowing boat.
The Disco is more utilitarian and is comfortable enough. You can have 7 seats too. I don't see one being massively cheaper to run than the Range.
But I also think that an older Disco has a certain "street cred" and is possibly a bit more low key.
It's really a matter of driving both and contemplating honestly which best fits your requirement.
Love my L322 wouldn’t change it for anything else. 2008 TDV8 Vogue. Fabulous luxury for Winter and Summer use. Great for both long and short journeys, plenty of room and very comfortable. Agree with everyone else that it’s not the cheapest car to run. Never had a Disco before but most likely to stick with a Rangie.
I had the exact same requirement 18 months ago with similar budget. Drove both. The L322 I drove wasn’t a great example I’ll admit. However it was a much better appointed car to be inside.
I ended up with a D4 because the best example came up during my search. It’s the SDv6 with the later 8speed box and I have to say I totally love it. No ‘Range Rover w
ker’ comments from anyone, it’s totally unassuming, but the go-to car for family stuff. 7 seats was briefly useful pre pandemic to cart little ones mates back from a football match, muddy boots an all, obviously not needed them since!
It’s such a great all rounder. Takes me in comfort 2 hours to the office or customer meeting, throw the bikes on the back and get out with the kids, towed a 110 project home with ease and acted as support vehicle for 5 of my mates on a track day at snetterton. Ended up towing home a stricken classic mini.

The boot when not using the 3rd row is rediculous. Camping trip for me, my boy with niece and nephew:-

And here’s a couple that the powerfully built directors won’t understand

Given the Rangie has depreciated a little more, I'd say you'd have a chance of finding a slightly better spec'd and looked after example for your budget. You could get a Vogue SE or an Autobiography for that money, could you get a HSE Disco 4 with reasonable mileage for similar? I'm not sure.
All things being equal though, personally I prefer the Disco 4.

Thanks fellas, interesting to have your perspectives! What’s interesting, and kind of heartening is that none of you have said “x or y car will s
t itself as soon as you get it off the forecourt”
My wife is of the opinion that the D4 still looks fresh whilst the Range Rover looks a bit dated, as had been said above. I think either looks quite smart.
The Discovery does appeal from the point of view that it has a more no nonsense tough thing about it and that I could chuck all sorts of s
te in the back with no bother! As well illustrated by eltax above in fact!

I've just sold a L322 TDV8 2009 last week.
In isolation the Disco is a perfectly acceptable place to be inside and the way it goes down the road again is absolutely fine........then you drive a 322 and it is a noticeable level up from the Disco in every respect - comfort, refinement, performance, ride/handling, luxury, noise suppression etc.
I'd recommend a full service and all the various oils replaced whichever you go for - peace of mind, especially if you are planning on keeping it for a number of years.
Cambelts on the D4, timing chain on the TDV8 is another consideration in terms of expenditure.
Both have the same weak points of suspension compressor and electronic parking brake module - an invoice to look out for in a car's history!.
Front suspension bushes/arms and wheel bearings I'd consider almost as service consumables - neither are expensive or time consuming to replace.
Tyres make a big difference, I eventually settled on Pirelli Scorpion Verde on both cars. I bought the D3 with some cheap chinese rubbish fitted and the wet weather performance (or lack of) was genuinely scary.
Happy shopping!
Cheers,
Chris

I've owned a D3 and D4 and the 4 is a way superior car, especially with the 8sp auto and more powerful 3.0 engine. Quieter too.I've just sold a L322 TDV8 2009 last week.

I've been through this very dilemma myself.
I collect my L322 TDV8 in a couple of days.
The reason I swerved the disco, and the only reason, was the constant reports of them eating crankshafts.
Also watch Harry Metcalfe's Vid on the L322. Worth a watch

I’ve got an L322 with the 3.6 TDV8, it came up very cheap and it’s a good car, personally if I’m being honest I do like the D4 a bit more looks and utility wise but the crankshaft failure horror stories put me off upgrading to one.
The 3.6 in the L322 can suffer turbo issues but they’re less likely if you check you don’t have any holes in the pipe work, change your oil regularly and let it idle for a minute or so after the turbos have been on boost before turning it off.
Really the best bet would be an L322 with the 4.4 TDV8 if you can stretch to one, the facelift 2010+ cars also look fresher both inside and out in my opinion.
Of course if you can get a warranty that covers it the D4 is a great choice, neither car will be cheap to run.

I am not sure what market prices have done, but my business sold a 2011 TDV8 with 80k miles two years ago for £13k. It was a really good and tidy car, but was getting to a stage where it needed some bodywork, new battery and some other small odds and ends.Really the best bet would be an L322 with the 4.4 TDV8 if you can stretch to one, the facelift 2010+ cars also look fresher both inside and out in my opinion.

I now have to use my car for work and the roads I have to drive down are nearly killing my dear old E39 530, so I was after something a bit tougher. Plus, and although I will actively not become a Walt, I’d quite like to try some off road driving!
I’m leaning towards the Range Rover, but my wife really likes the Disco! To be honest I’m sure I’d be perfectly happy with either, but just not sure which!
I do hope you will forgive me, but you require something "a bit tougher" and you think that a Jaguar Land Rover product will fill the bill?I now have to use my car for work and the roads I have to drive down are nearly killing my dear old E39 530, so I was after something a bit tougher.
