Original exhaust position

Hi all.

Some ape bodged some sport tails on the car pre my ownership.

My issue is a rattle between the original centre pipes and the now bent and mangled chassis brace guard thingie.

There’s a welded bit between the pipes with a hole in that looks like it should be bolted down but I’m not sure?

Anyone got a picture of original exhaust position and fixings etc?

A pic of the original exhaust must be rarer than etc..etc..
BUT
from what I remember there was a 'tag' welded to the inner side of each centre pipe and a bolt (M8/10 ?)
which joined them to gain rigidity to the system.
The head of this bolt would then rest against another bolt (with a rubber damper on it) which screwed into the rear, upper side of the Chassis Brace. Thus enabling some rigidity that was dampened by the rubber contact point.

Peter Essling can supply you with a new Chassis Brace, just make sure you stipulate the year of your Cerb.

Thanks guys that makes sense now.

I’ve bolted straight to the chassis brace for now to stop the rattle. I’ll have to find a rubber bit to dampen the vibration through the chassis brace.

Well the original exhaust would have been a huge box under the boot section


mines now similar to the above with additional silencing, but is significantly lighter than the original. You can see the hole for the rubber mount


not sure if you can see the mounts on this



But the rear sports box hangers are only £1.60 from Halfords. it's a Hex403 mount

OK, if we're gonna drown the poor bugger in photos....

Here is an exhaust clamp which 3 reputable TVR Dealers left on my system....


Here were the New for Old transfers that I made...


Here are the Brackets that were supplied by the manufacturer....


The original hanger brackets can be slightly undone and moved through 180°

and here, using the aforementioned rubber hangers, is how the whole system hung together....

I've never seen anyone mention the way that the backbox and pipes when taken together (up to but not including the cats) are perfectly balanced

When you hold them up by the fixing points used by the rubber insulators they are in perfect balance

(as observed with the Silverstone Performance backbox)

I thought I saw a while back on here (probably a few years) someone had fitted a metal strip (just a strip of metal with two holes drilled in it) between the bottom of the brackets to keep the brackets vertical and help keep the tailpipes aligned

When I had the sports tails I flattened an old spanner and used that as a rod to link them.

But I much prefer a back box, the two separate tails would droop out of alignment and the wonkiness drove me nuts

I found that tends to happen if you're trying to get the rear hangers controlling direction and if you move back a joint and adjust from around the center pipes, it all hangs quite easily.

The other thing I found is the rear hangers unbolt from the chassis and it was much easier fitting the hangers to the rubbers off the car, then bolting them to the chassis.

I have the bar between the two exhaust hangers, keeps them a little more rigid but still allows enough movement in the poly hangers.

Mine never had the centre exhaust mount so only recently actually welded the two mid pipes together and added some rubber mounts. It did help.

my next plan is to put my cats back in. Fed up of stinking or fumes and getting a headache. Plus want to start taking my boy out in it.

I made a new set of hanger brackets.

I found without the centre pipe mount, the weight of the whole exhaust on the rear hangers was too great and the hangers wouldn't last more than a year. I too welded the centre pipes together and found that a gearbox mount was the exact size to support the pipes.

I do like the idea of a bar between the tailpipes though. Perhaps a small turnbuckle, so you can wind them in or out as required. I'll add that to the list (after the engine rebuild) :-(

Weird one yesterday. I had the exhaust hanger snap. They've been on the car for 12 years? something like that.

I ended up at a National Trust property quietly using a couple of cable ties to hold it together to get me home. The rubber had started to split as well...





Luckily I still had my welder so could fix it for now until I make/get a new one... Huge blobby overweld but it works. I still had a couple of spare rubbers so new one fitted. (Halfords - very cheap)

I've had two of those 90 degree threaded bars snap over the years, both very inconvenient.

This is the current setup, tie wraps around the hangers and reuse of some ford X flow head bolts 6 years in and it doesn't look like it's going to fail.

That looks interesting. What part do you use to go from the rubber mount to the drop bolt - is that a nut welded on?

I've always thought there must be a way to have male bobbins like these

Then a bracket across and the exhausts hung from that.

I've had a bar bolted between the two rear cans since I put them on. They used to move around a lot. Mine never had the centre mount either which I also added and made a big difference.

I took my H pipe out to fit my cats so had to cut the mid pipe mount out so need to make another, I'd forgotten how much wider than cats are and a pain to put back on.
