Hi guys.
I’m in the market for a facelift golf R, thinking of selling my focus ST225.
1: is it a worthwhile upgrade.
2: how long do you think it would take the facelift models to be around the £20K mark? For a decent one for not a stupid high mileage? Should I wait a year or two.
3: anything I need to look out for when I go to a garage?

I was very close to buying one. They’ve held their values annoying well to be honest, actually rose of but start of pandemic and held steady since.
Is it your daily? Do you want dsg or manual? If manual take into account the clutches are weak as. Daily it’s a perfect car, weekend b roader, not for me personally which is why I went for a fk2 type r!
A very capable car, and probably the best all rounder but a bit too capable at times and lacks excitement!

Oh have they risen? I have only started looking into one last couple of weeks. Is it your daily? Do you want dsg or manual? If manual take into account the clutches are weak as. Daily it’s a perfect car, weekend b roader, not for me personally which is why I went for a fk2 type r!

Oh my cousin had a FK2. Loved it! Currently got a focus ST225 (a lot of money pumped into it 🙈😂)
Will be getting some work done to the R when I get one. Remap etc.

The thermostat housing replacement is just over £700 at dealer prices. Had mine replaced under warranty. That was the price on the invoice.K20r said:

Yup, 2 years ago, I saw a few sell for 14k 14 plates with 50k on, now that would be 15k ish, 2 years on!Yes it will my daily/family car.

Dsg is excellent to be honest, and if it was my fault that’s what I’d go for too! Try and get one with a decent spec, hard to come across but better re sale value, just a heads up the leather is pants and looks old quick!

Hi, I had a Mk7 for 2 yrs and 7.5 for 3. Tbh, I couldn't tell much between them at all. Both had fabric seats and no sign of any wear. The seats are good, slightly sporty style bolsters and the R logo printed in. The DSG is great, you can always use the flappy paddles if you want to switch to manual mode. I have virtual dash in the 7.5 and some of the exterior styling is slightly different but not by much. I have heated seats in the 7.5 which must be standard, don't think I had them in the Mk7. I think both of mine were standard spec. I just specced up Lapiz blue which imo is the nicest colour. Maybe if I went back on looked at a Mk7 it would look dated inside but I doubt it.

You won't notice any difference in performance between a 7 and a 7.5. Having gone through the purchase process I would suggest you buy the best example you can find and don't worry about the difference between the models. Quite a lot of rough cars around and VW tended to have the best stock - they tend to push the tatty ex lease cars onto the car supermarkets.
The Golf has as as much useable performance as my M2comp and I actually prefer the steering feel in the VW.

I prefer the styling of the 7.5 and the media screen thing is nicer as is the virtual dash. Performance/handling/ride wise I cannot tell any difference at all. I think the official 0-60 time difference is a couple of tenths of a second which you'd never be able to use or distinguish in normal driving. For the sort of normal driving I do I couldn't tell between them at all - perhaps a proper driver would though on a circuit or something.Cheers. Look forward to owning on. If you are in the 20k ballpark then hold out for a facelift. Nicer interior, the 7 speed box is better as well and yes 310bhp vs 300.
Maybe not your cup of tea but facelift Audi S3 (same car) are very similar money.
I went mk7 golf to facelift S3 black edition which is 310bhp 7 speed leather, b and o stereo etc.
All great cars by the way! Mk8 golf R being so expensive has meant no impact on mk7 prices.

I'd hold out for a 7.5 - the instruments and infotainment are a big step forwards.
Prices of late R's and GTi's with low or delivery mileage went up towards the end of last year as supplies of new ones dried up.
You can still pick up a delivery mileage one for £32-33k......but last year you could find them for £28k.
Given the new R is nudging £40k, the Mk7.5 will likely hold strong - in part because it's arguably better looking than the Mk8.
Buy the very best example that you can, as many were sold on leases there are plenty of scruffy examples about.
VW dealers will likely have the better examples, on something like this I wouldn't buy a cheap one.
