I would love to swap to a mx5 but ive got 2 of us and the dog to carry, i know a lot of older soft tops had a little shelf behind the seats which would have worked fine but not sure if the mx5 has this, Is there any modification/trim i could rip out so pooch (jack Russel) sized can come out with us?

Nope, no backseat or parcel shelf.
Plus you need to strap your dog in for safety too, not a good move to have a dog bouncing around untethered in a car, and certainly not in an open top

You will ultimately come up with the only viable solution, 2 cars. Just do some "man maths" and it will seem economical as well. smile

My dogs have always been happy in the passenger footwell, not sure how much space there is in an MX5 though?

I believe it’s against the law to have an untethered/in restrained dog in the car in the U.K these days.

It will need a harness clipped into a seat belt or be in a cage/dog guarded area.

Putting it on a shelf with the roof down will be like a catapult if you have to brake hard or hit something a speed.

Or get a harness that attaches to the seat belt and then click it on the belt of whoever is the passenger and dog sits on lap?

Correct. It's classed as an unrestrained load, though only the nobbiest of traffic officers would give out a ticket for that.
This is on Ebay for £225.....

Passenger footwell and passenger's lap, 2 x 25kg dogs an easy fit in a mk3.

There’s barely enough room for a person in an MX5 never mind a dog as well.

A couple used to come to the MX5 meets with a Labrador sized dog, they'd trained it to lie in the footwell with it's head by the handbrake

Get yourself an MX-5 - you know it makes sense, then get one of these too! Fun for all of the family!

Couple of years ago we happened on an MX5 in mid France.
The couple were driving up from the South to UK roof up on a hot day.
Reason?
Two dogs on the rear parcel shelf - not small dogs either.
Seems they were all happy travelling that way - chacqun etc.
Only problem with having the dog in the passenger foot-well on a long journey is that the exhaust does of course run under there so potentially can get quite hot.
As has been said it's a good excuse to buy another car to transport the dog.
I killed two birds with one stone by buying a BMW Touring which coincidentally happens to have a V8 under the bonnet biggrin

My dad takes his border terrier on his motorbike in a specialist tank bag, so I'm sure getting a small dog in/on an mx5 is possible!

Maybe you could get one of those boot racks and buy a dog bag and strap it to that?

Basically it's just their head and neck outside the bag but the dog absolutely loves it!
