'In Case of Emergency' Campaign

Not sure if anyone has posted on this yet, but this is a very good idea considering yesterday.
The In Case of Emergency (ICE) campaign.
The Ambulance Trust are asking for this information to be passed on to as many people as possible.
The idea is that you store the word ICE in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted 'In Case of Emergency.'
It's such a simple idea but could be really helpful in an emergency — it would save ambulance crews and hospital staff time and would ensure that a patient's loved one was contacted as soon as possible.
Please can you also forward this to everyone who you know, family, friends, colleagues, etc.
It won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know and it really could help or even save your life.

That is a truly excellent idea.
That is the sort of thing the government should be promoting, instead of their daft booklets telling you to have a stock of tinned food, and 50 gallons of bottled water.
Oh and I forgot, I should have listened to the radio!

Perhaps they could put "underground survival kit vending machines" in the entrance to tube stations.
That may sound like a bit of a sick joke but the sad part, to me anyhow, is that the second suggestion is less helpful.
Everybody should carry a handkerchief anyway, and if you don't you can just rip your shirt up. I doubt a tiny torch is going to help much with the blackness of the underground.

I think you'd be surprised just how resilient a mobile phone is. You might get blown to pieces yourself, but there is a very high likelihood that your mobile will survive. At the very least, it's SIM card DNA.

This is beginning to sound like what ID cards should be;
A standardised dynamic data container, that is optional, that the individual holds, has control over and actually helps in time of emergency.
I've said before, the government are either looking to control you, or are extremely bad at IT.
Either way everyone should expect, nay demand, more.

In principal this sounds like a good idea. However, I do have a couple of concerns which are stopping me from doing this at the moment.
Firstly, consider that you have been involved in an accident/incident and are critically injured - maybe even fatally injured. Now do you really want a policeman or pare=amedic telephoning your wife/husband/mother/father to tell them that news? Surely an address would be more useful so that the police can go straight round with trained officers to break the news in a proper manner.
Secondly, consider that your phone has been lost or stolen. Wouldn't it be really funny in the mind of a brainless scrote, to call the ICE numbers on the newly acquired phone and inform your loved ones that you have been killed?
I know that the idea is there for a very good reason. But unfortuanately we live in a world where terrorism is a rare occurence and everyday theft and moral degredation are an everyday occurrence.
Just think carefully before making a decision.
