Is it better to charge up and down the drive applying brakes to clean the buggers of just let em get red/crusty and hope for the best?

What I'm trying to say is should I clean the discs every month or so? Or leave the rust in the hope that a little surface rust is no bad thing for 4/5 months.

The brakes don't care. The amount of corrosion is roughly the same whether it's six months of driving or six months of standing. The only difference is whether the rust is getting scraped off every day, or allowed to accumulate. In either case the discs will clean up within a few miles of normal driving.

Best to avoid putting any sort of oily protection on the disc since that will prevent the brakes from working properly unless you also clean it all off again.

This stuff claims to safely prevent oxidation, may be worth a try:

Interesting, not cheap. I wonder what the active ingredients are?

Sodium Nitrite on the label. Google confirms it's a corrosion inhibitor. I have no experience of the product myself.

Read it more carefully, it's to spray on already wet discs to stop them from corroding. It's not a moisture displacement for long term use.
The only ways to stop iron from corroding are not for use on brake discs.
