We're in Melbourne too - living in Bundoora. Great place to live, we love it in the main.If you have a car that's meaningful to you or valuable, it's worth bringing it. I’m ex UK live in melbourne and whilst the car scene is vibrant it’s basically Ford/ Holden vs anything Japanese.
There’s a couple of lotus’s here and about 1 TVR - but the 4x4 scene here is huge.
Basically anything exotic is few and far between due to the luxury car tax making them incredibly expensive.
I looked into bringing our fairly normal cars with us but you end up with a grey import so they are worth less than the correctly imported cars (with the import plate affixed to the b pillar) and an MPH speedo in a state where going more than 4kmh over the limit can get you a fine - not easy unless you have gps or a digital display to get that margin of accuracy!!
I get it with a 7 though, you would struggle to find one over here for less than absurd money and they are free and far between.
Anyway - there’s some good roads out north of melbourne (Healesville, Warburton, reefton, mt Dandenong) which are good on a bike so will be good in a 7. Just watch for cops, they literally hide in the hedges!! - get Waze and use it....

I have thought about this. The first couple of years - we would want to explore the country/beyond and getting out and about, so maybe blatting in a 7 won’t be top of the list.forzaminardi said:

Yeah I use bike apps to find a good route for the 7, so sounds advice. I have an Elan +2 as well but not sure about bringing two cars across, so it would have to be the 7 between the two.

Have you looked into what is required? There is a bit involved, like import approval, asbestos free certification and how you are getting it here.

Given my 7 was manufactured in 2002, one would hope that asbestos is not an issue!

I drove mine to Southampton docks to go into a container. Had to be cleaned here for any seeds it might have picked up on the drive down there. Given my 7 was manufactured in 2002, one would hope that asbestos is not an issue!
It came out the spray shop from a total rebuild the day before.
Then they need compliance and a blue slip.
I wouldn't bother. Australia is anti-performance car. There are no 'real' roads to drive on, no scenic stretches that aren't subject to masses of radar-rogers everywhere. The speed limits mean you'll need to set off a week in advance to give yourself enough time to travel just a few hundres kms. Luxury car tax and import duty makes any potential purchase of something decent, completely pointless or prohibitively expensive. Personally, I wait until I go back to the UK and dust off my Audi RS6 (at my father's house) every Christmas to give it the beans. There is no other country, apart from Switzerland, where I've felt I may as well become a lemming automotan and give up on enjoying driving for 11 months every year. Take Perth for example, the only decent car you'll ever see on the road are those being shifted from one Barbagallo garage to another. IT. IS. PITIFUL.

I read a lot about this when considering coming also. It's not that bad, in Victoria at least. Urban sprawl = urban crawl, yes, but not far out of town there are good roads. Choose your time and place well and you'll have as much fun as in the UK.forzaminardi said:

Choose your time and place well and you'll have as much fun as in the UK.So I sold my fastish bike, and bought a fast trail bike, rode it in forests, a lot. Even in the middle of forests I would get pulled by the police. I would see no-one else for 4 hours of riding, except 2 policemen. Bonkers.
There’s a very strong MX5 forum here mainly cos they are one of the few reasonably price sportyish cars here and there’s a big modding scene for them and race series.
Where I live in Brisbane there’s a decent Lotus 7 scene too but not really online.
I hated driving in Sydney but Qld offers endless, epic country roads with zero police but you do have reign it back as series speeding could see serious consequences

For all things 7 join Ozclubbies.com.au there are very active groups in each of the state's and a formal national gathering every 2 years, informal larger gatherings every 6 months or so and runs most weekends.
