Ive got a split in a short piece of 0.375" id power steering hose. (according to google)

Its on the return line.

Are there any materials to avoid?

Low pressure return isn't critical, but an oil type hose will be best for longevity.

Regular fuel hose will last many years though.

Be absolutely sure it is the low pressure return...the high pressure side operates at over 1000psi.
