Linking Chromecast audio and video

I'm really struggling with this, can anyone shed any light?

I have a projector with a Chromecast plugged into it and a hifi with a Chromecast Audio plugged into it. Both work fine on their own but I'd like to send video the the projector and audio to the hifi at the same time. If I set up a group and try and cast to the group it just plays audio on the projector which is useless.

If I send audio to the group (spotify for instance) I get audio on both devices so the group itself is working.

Am I missing something obvious or is it actually not possible to do what I want it to do?

Effectively you're asking different devices to separately stream two things and sync them up. Intuitively, that's never going to work well.

Is there any way you can connect the hifi as the audio for the projector? That's going to be by far the easiest way to set this up.

I could, but I'd need to run a cable around behind the skirting board. Not the end of the world as I'm replacing them in the next couple of weeks but I was hoping to avoid using wires if possible. Looks like that's what I'm going to end up doing though.

Bluetooth transmitter/receiver a possibility? Modern ones are good quality and pretty low-latency.

That might be an option. I was playing about yesterday and it appears that if you use Chromecast to send the video the the projector you can't use the bluetooth on the computer/phone to send the sound to a bluetooth speaker so maybe if I get a bluetooth adaptor to send the audio from the projector that would work. Thanks!

Your original idea is good but not possible; you can't cast the audio portion of a streamed film to the CCA and the video portion to the CC. Neither will you be able to bluetooth the audio from your 'phone while casting the video to the CC.

You could try attaching a bluetooth transmitter to the CC receiver on the projector and transmitting it to a bluetooth reciever on the sound system but you may well struggle with delay; the bluetooth transmitters and receivers always introduce a delay into things and this may scupper the plan. I suspect that a piece of old-fashioned cable between one and the other is your best bet.
